I'm trying to find out if the contractors I've been trying to get to do some work are just fucktards or if it is an industrial standard to have someone drive an 8 hour round trip to meet at a build site and not bother to show up to do an estimate on a job that the county requires to be done by a licensed contractor. 3 contractors contacted to get estimates, 2 no shows, 1 showed but couldnt give an estimate, none have answered or returned calls.

That is seeming to be more and more common right now. My brother is trying to have a garage built and encountered the same behavior. Either they wouldnt show or would be there for a short time and give a stupid high bid.

He did have one show up and give him the "reality" of things. Which was basically they are slammed so doing smaller projects isnt worth it to them. Basically why do a 2 week job when you can book 2-3 month long jobs.

Which really had me thinking, why nobody goes into the business just focusing on the smaller jobs. The demand is there for the jobs so having a company focused just on those types of jobs seems like it would do just fine.

Yeah. I'd say screw it and do it myself if my arm wasn't currently f'ed up. It pissed me off because I wanted to get stuff started by now but county regs and contractors are screwing it up.

    Small useful for me stuff.

Make sure you check their credentials once you find one. If they aren't licensed and have bonding etc you could get the work done and get hosed. With how things are right now scammers are out in abundance. Good luck.

Been there on both ends of that deal. Trick is to let the builder know you are willing to let your small project be fill in work for them. Don't set a deadline and they will generally be happy to do it. Even though there are a lot of "good" longer duration jobs out there the crews always have some down time waiting for inspections, other trades, and materials.

Yeah. I worked all appointments to their schedule, even waited 3 hours for one who was running late on the agreed time. Problem for me is the limited # of people who are out there. 3 months til the doc will let me do work, so if no one agrees to do it by December, I'm going to go buy some more equipment and just do it myself.
First thing is install a culvert and clear the 1/4 mile long driveway. If I can't get someone to do it, I'll buy a compactor and a small dozer. After that is build an RV pad and get septic and a water well set up.

I hear ya on that. To many people get a quote and want it the next week. In my brothers case it was "i would like it built before it snows" which was a good 6 months away.

Both at once suggests it is not an HID, ballast or projector issue. Look at power connections.

So I'll be in Portland for a couple days for work (Tuesday mid-day through Thursday evening) and staying downtown near Washington/Broadway. Suggestions on places to eat near there that are walking distance? Will not have a car so within reasonable walking distance would be best.

I took @username 's advice and camped at dug bar on Saturday night. Not much has changed since I was there two years ago. Such a beautiful place. I spent all day Sunday exploring up by Hat Point and found a kickass spot right on top of one of the foothills. It was a good long weekend!

Nice! Hopefully it wasn't too busy with archery hunters. I was out in the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness last weekend and it was crawling with californians. I'm getting really good at bugling them in, I wish there was some kind of bounty on them.

Lots and lots of hunters. The worst part was that the one trail I wanted to take from Hat Point to Lord Flat was completely closed off to motor vehicles for the hunting season. Oh well.

Ok, $10K for the pad and $15K for the road. I'll get it done before the snow flies.
