It fits just took a little time to figure it out

 

Yeah, those plastic clips were tough. We used a small screwdriver to release them because needle nose were at an awkward angle up against the frame.

 

Ok, so the plastic clip that faces upwards needs to be released and that wire loom moved so that the L bracket will line up where it needs to be then? I didn't see any mention of moving that particular clip in the instructions, so I thought maybe we had something incorrect and didn't want to be ruining clips that needed to stay put.

 

The instructions were pretty basic. They lead you in the right direction, but they definitely need some improvement. Those clips were pretty stout and you'll have a hard time ruining them, but there is wire loom and brake lines that need to be moved.

 

I removed the clips that are inside the frame and moved the brake lines out of the way, it was the clip on top of the frame/chassis that was giving me the trouble and had me second guessing myself. Also, it took us an hour to get the long handled washer up into the boxed portion of the frame. Since the slider was sitting about 3/16"-1/4" off the frame, it made it very difficult to get the lock washer and nut started on there.

 

Nice looking sliders, enjoyed reading through this thread. Seems these are seriously solid! Looking for something that will provide protection both on some basic trails/backwoods as well as parking lot dings. Had some nerf bars on my 4Runner that worked fine and never got a door ding (though several idiots tried) and were great steps when loading roof rack, but swore if I ever did it again I'd step up to real sliders. Now in a new Tacoma, so back in the market. Had two questions with this style slider:

Is there any concern about moisture/grit/salt etc getting trapped between the slider structure and the frame itself that will promote rust/corrosion down the road? Any way to prevent this if so? Typically I keep a vehicle 10-15 years, so definitely a consideration.

Any ideas how these would affect the truck in a side impact wreck, ie T-bone? Obviously they will very likely take the brunt of the impact depending on what hits truck, but any thoughts on how transferring that to the frame instead of the side of cab like Toyota designed might end up? Any potential insurance liability issues; could they claim these caused more structural damage? Side airbags and everything still deploy as intended?

Apologies for the long post and questions. Just went through an insurance claim that didn't go very smoothly after a tree crushed my 4Runner, so insurance was fresh on the brain ha as I read through thread.

There "is" concern about debris sitting between the flange and chassis and that would be the case with any slider from any vendor of this attachment style. We recommend if you have concern, remove yearly and clean and touch up any exposed metal areas with a fresh coat of paint. We've seen good results with a product from Eastwood. I can't recall the name of it but our customer Tim @Bawlmore will know because I watched him do it before putting our sliders on his truck.

There is always the potential that an insurance adjuster could try to claim your frame damage from having these installed but it is highly unlikely. Any aftermarket accesory could be used as an excuse for anything but really a decent claims adjuster and insurance company I doubt would do that. If you're in an accident that major, I doubt the sliders would make a difference at that point. This is all opinion based and I have no real facts to back it up so take it as you will.

Thanks for the thorough response. My second question isn't so much an issue, more a safety/liability thought, I understand your answer. I had a Baja flat utility rack that was crushed into the roof that came up with insurance (they paid me the value of the rack in the end of a long story), hence the nature of my question. It was really more a general safety question to this style slider since you guys are both engineers and whether or not these would in anyway change the safety nature of my truck in a crash.

Simply comes down to contemplating removing these each year and reinstalling to take care of the frame/sliders. Not sure if I'm quite ready to commit to that.

Removal and installation yearly isn't that bad. Total time for both would be a few hours.

 

My educated opinion is that our sliders would fold up like a pretzel just like any other sliders in a sever accident. The frame plate we designed is strong but only for the purpose we designed it for. The kind of forces in a serious accident would be very high. Something like 50-100 g's. The sliders could handle around 3-5 g's (I'm approximating). They are really designed to handle a few times the weight of the vehicle. The forces in an accident would be at least another of order of magnitude higher. At that point, they would collapse like Play-Doh and not be likely to add much to affect the system anymore than any other style slider.

In a much much slow fender bender, it's possible that they would contribute to more damage. But again, I think this would be the case for any style slider.

 

The Eastwood product is shown here, I used the converter on rust that had shown up in my welds on the tacoma frame, and then the encapsulator on the ENTIRE frame:

I have completely covered my entire frame and sliders with this product, about a 3 week process since I got every nook and cranny, and it's damn tough. I also put it on the sliders and it holds up extremely well. In regards to the rust between the flange and frame, I applied some moly grease with a rag all over the metal components that fasten to each other. This grease, in addition to my annual oil spray, should keep rust away for the 20 years I hope to own this truck.

 

Or you can coat the areas where they will contact each other, let dry for a few days, install sliders, then silicone the contact points.

That is three so far, need two more by the end of the day tomorrow and the deal is done!

Biggest problem would be my patience waiting 12 weeks ha. I'd much rather get these bolted on before weather turns bad and salt hits the road while I have a clean frame, not sure if 12 weeks would allow that. With that lead time might just have to wait until next spring/summer and a thorough underbody cleaning.

 

I understand. No fun doing this install in the cold.

 

Any way of bumping up the lead time to get a sale?
