Im not sure about that but it is not 900. That is for the Whole overhead concole. just the display is 160 so dont let them tell you 900 thats for the plastic which who knows why the plastic cost so much.

Those 510 resistors sure are small! The magnifying class helped a lot. If I have to do it again I will replace the 510 resistor with one having wire ends.

I had a broken end on one of the 510 resistors so I soldered both ends. Since both clips were laying next to the clip-hole when I took it a part it took me more time figuring out how the clips went back in than it did to make the repair.

GREAT FIX!! I couldn't see anything visually wrong with my 510 resistors but I decided to sauder both ends on both resistors and it WORKED!! I Love Tacoma World. Its single handedly eliminating the need for a mechanic!

    Not going to brag.
I can believe the $900 price tag for a dealer repair. I had mine done under warranty and they replaced the entire center console with and headliner! My truck is an '06, but the center console is slightly different and the headliner is definitely different. Glad I didn't pay for it but I kick myself for not requesting to keep the old parts.

The dealer wanted $400.00 for the display unit plus 1.5 hours labour to fix mine. I took it out and had it back in and operational in 15 minutes for nothing. Thanks Squirrel for the excellent solution, we should be sending you a cut of our savings, LOL

Not necessary, Keng. :) If I'm ever up in NB, I'll take a beer though...

This isn't my fix. I just took bad instructions from a number of sites & made them easier to understand/follow.

Can't remember who originally found/fixed this. Its been a while...

For the money it saved me, we'll have few. I appreciate you taking the time to put all this imformation together!

I'm going in to the dealer this afternoon and imparting my opinion of their service though. Of course I'll enjoy that after paying for them to fix the problem just before Christmas. I don't enjoy being lied to.

    Cheers

Did this today and it worked. The resistors looked fine, but soldered them anyway, and it worked. I have an 06 and it seems like most of the people in this thread had 06 models also. Does it seem like this year model has this problem more, or is it just something that tends to go wrong when the truck gets 3-4 years old? Thanks for the write up.

I did ours yesterday. I could not see any problem with the solder joints except that they didn't look like they had much solder. I tried resoldering anyway and as soon as I got one end of the first resistor hot enough for solder to flow, it moved. The other end had a cold joint. I soldered both resistors and hoped for the best.

The problem I was trying to solve was that the display doesn't work when we first start up in cold weather. Once it warms up it turns on. I just checked and at 27° it did not turn on this morning. :( So either I did not get a good solder joint or there is another problem at low temps.

That's wierd. Mine went out, came back on, and then was off when I turned on the truck one day. I punched the Mode button and it came back for a day or two, then gone for good until I soldered it. Sounds like you may have an issue with the electronics. Can you replace the 510s like some folks have done?

I had to do this on my '05 today, the unit stopped working last weekend. The resistor was completely off the circuit card. I hope my repair lasts.
    Thanks to all.

I wonder if we didn't have eleventy bazillion pages of people doing DIY fixes if there would be a TSB on this yet? This seems to be quite common...

I think a TSB documents a special or non-obvious procedure for a problem. Like the suspension problem that requires a different rear spring pack. In this case, the tech just removes the bad part and replaces it with a new or refurbed one. I doubt that the dealer techs are resoldering the parts. If Toyota notices how many come back under warranty, they might do that. Or they might just feed the returned parts back to their supplier who also might do that.
