with all due respect, I think you may not have a good handle on, or understanding of, business.

I really am not trying to be condescending so please don't be offended.

I bet it would be something like that. Toyota skimped on quality to save a few pesos

This is an interesting response. I find smitty's postings very informative. It seems Smitty is someone that likes to fight for the small guy, and share information. I don't know Smitty, but I have never seen his posts as insulting, entitled, or as though spoken by a perfect person. I find it a bit sad that people respond in this way to a person who seems to be a helpful team player that is willing to stand in the gap for the rest of us. Shameful.

    Wouldn't be surprised.
That fly by in the civic makes it a bitch to drive standard with in the snow.
Fuckin scary with no steady throttle response

I've had it in my last 3 cars.
even on a more performance geared car like the subaru STI, it makes a nice difference. Convinced my buddy to get it for his. It really is nice.

The issue is likely Toyota being extra cautious for pedal MCU errors such that would cause unintended acceleration errors. Toyota never realy told the world why the earlier cars had unintended acceleration, did they? The actual cause, which I will not go into right now, is a little concerning. Therefore, When you mash the pedal, I think the delay may be caused by the computer checking multiple times if the acceleration is intentional. Toyota does not want to return to court again for safety problems.

I have to agree. Could easily see it being a safety feature.
I'm just thinking in the winter it might actually be good. If your boots are covered in snow and slush (you can only bang off so much) foot might slip and go full throttle and cause the back end to slip so this way if you do slip it wont respond right away giving you a second to adjust.

Yes, it has to check multiple times - Oh, the pedal was mashed, do they really want to accelerate? Can I do it in sixth gear? Should I try? How about fifth gear? Hmm, should I try that one anyway? No... well what about fourth gear? Dang, oh what about third? Hey how is my CPS holding up? Oh where was I? I need to start over... are they still holding the throttle? What gear am I in?

Each one of these decisions takes several clock cycles, it adds up quick!

Agreed. What would you say if I told you a cosmic ray, or a strong microwave signal could be received, by some antenna feature in the brake system's geometry (say an unbonded brake line becoming an RF transmission line due to it close proximity to the sheet metal ground plane) launching the said RF signal straight into the drive-by-wire computer; causing a flip bit in the pedal MCU, telling your ECM you just put the pedal to the floor when you actually didn't? Or perhaps it was a floor mat that caused auto manufacturers to place a copious amount of polling checks on the drive-by-wire MCU, which takes time, to avoid unintended acceleration. Just a hypothetical though, right?

Sounds like toyota might want to work on implementing some radhard into their design!

fuck I cant find the video but I'm thinking of jeremy clarkson testing the maserati gran turismo
when he complains about the transmission in normal mode not race says something like

'I'm supposed to be doing something, what was it. Change the radio, no, oh I know I'm a gear box I need to change gears'

I think so. I was a consultant Electrical Engineer, on a research team, for a major auto manufacturer's unintended acceleration problems, back around 2010-2011. I can tell you, the problem is very real, and interestingly, some Fords have a serious issue too, which I will not get into, seeing as police (and other gov. officials) drive some of these vehicles, and they need to be protected. Sadly, most engineers do not even understand the root cause of these problems, so many redundant checks must be made, on say a gas pedal MCU, until possible cosmic ray/stray microwaves come out of alignment with the incidental transmission line (antenna-like feature in the geometry of the car). This causes a delay.

unshielded cable works just like an antenna too so that could help pick up stray signals

For sure. Cross interface interference (tongue twister) can cause a multitude of problems if the induced potential difference is enough to toggle a 0 to a 1.
