I shopped around and bought mine 500 below MSRP, 4x4 OR, from Carlsbad Toyota back in February. I shopped around five other dealers in the San Diego area, and must say, Escondido Toyota and San Diego Toyota were total douches and wouldn't negotiate whatsoever. I got awesome service and get 15% off from parts all the time.

Sorry, didn't read all of the comments, but if it hasn't been said: just get out of SoCal and you can do much better. I got mine in Salinas at a price well below MSRP back in November when the trucks were very hot and hard to find. The AZ thing is an option, but I didn't want to hassle with the DMV stuff and I got a better deal in CA anyway. In AZ they don't have the same limits on some things like Doc Fees, so even though the "price" was the same, the OTD price was much worse in my case. Each deal is different yada-yada, but consider NorCal before you go through the out of state hassle. That said, the folks I dealt with in AZ were very helpful and willing to do what it took to make the deal happen (other than eat the outrageous doc fees).

[Edit: you have to get north of San Luis Obispo at least. Here they want 2k over MSRP and seem happy to let the trucks sit until they get it.]

And they have a horrible service dept. I have nothing but good things to say about Gilroy Toyota which is where I just bought mine.

Congrats on the truck and the deal.

It's bad enough that most people have to earn $60k in pretax dollars to pay for a $40k vehicle, but having to go through the process described above is nonsense. Who are these people and when did we agree to let them do this to us? I'm not an anarchists, but how about we dispense with safety, smog and weight checks for all DOT certified light vehicles/trucks under mfg warranty up to 36k miles?

Yes, and also that Costco gets you a 15% parts/service discount with some exceptions.

True, which is why I was specific about my location; I figured more than just Californians would be reading the posts here. :)

Don't worry. I won't. I'm patient, have no need to be 'first kid on the block'.

But IF (and that's a really big if) I ever buy another new Toyota of any type, I'll use the info in this thread, post 8 in particular, to help with the shopping.

What's broken is the entire sales model. Dealerships as sales points is outdated. They need to have samples for people to touch and drive, order online with fixed pricing, and leave the whole 'sales & negotiation' process in the trash can.

The sales people need to upgrade their skills and move into other areas of work.

It's not the 4x2's that are the issue in socal, dealers will discount those all day. You can walk in and get $1100 off MSRP on a 2wd Tacoma without even trying. It is the 4wd models that they try to destroy people on. Most dealerships I went to only had one or two 4x4 models at most. Some didn't even have one (I'm not even going to get started on manual transmission either). I don't know if I've seen many people get below 500 off MSRP for a 4x4 in Socal without either a trade in or some sort of relationship/history with the dealer.

I gave up, it was easier and cheaper to fly to Arizona and have the dealer pick me up at the airport, then drive back to CA.

The DMV took all of 2 hours of my time, it really wasn't a bad process at all. The smog check and weight certificate took 20 minutes together at most. If i encounter a situation with a vehicle like this again where dealers are trying to mark everything up, I'll fly out and drive back again. I could have spent weeks, even months, more smashing my head into a wall with the Socal dealers and gotten nowhere...

Good for you. You have found a way to get around these outlandish MSRP markups these dealers are trying to get away with. I would never pay MSRP for any vehicle let alone a vehicle being marked up over MSRP

I had a salesman in Scottsdale, AZ tell me he could sell the white 2017 TRD Pro that he had on the lot for $55K. Reeellleeey.

I bought my Taco OR from Bell Toyota for $1200 under sticker with a 7 yr bumper to bumper to cover the 27 computers and the JBL stereo (thanks Costco).

$44600 for my TRD Pro. basically what the sticker said. 5k markup is common for the Pro's right now in California. One dealership asked for $65k on a TRD Pro for no reason! you hear the same story "everyone is marking it up but we only have it marked up for 3995". i want to slap every single salesperson telling me this was a hot ticket item and they would only get 3-4 a year. 4x4's aren't even being sold for anything over MSRP at most dealerships. only someone dumb would fall for that.

MSRP on these trucks is already overpriced by at least 10K-12K. Paying another 5K over MSRP is insane.

Bought mine from Alexander Toyota in Yuma, AZ for ~$2500 under MSRP and the only thing I needed was a smog check and the vin verification to register it in CA. The verification was just a quick, two second drive up thing at the DMV. For the weight certificate, I was told that since the vehicle is so new they will accept the MSO instead. Just a warning, if anyone is looking at buying in AZ the dealerships there are allowed to charge around a $400 dealership documentation fee which is basically just pocket cash for them. In CA that number is closer to $80.

I was told the mark-up was because it was "rare". So I decided to build my own with an Off Road. Much more fun and I get exactly what I want.

I bought a 2016 TRD-OR in Illinois for $4000 less than similar set ups in SoCal. This was just before Christmas when I would be flying to the Midwest anyhow to see the family. The cost to fly out then drive back was less than round trip airfare.

$1200 under sticker? Is that actual MSRP or was the sticker including BS markups that don't actually matter. Trade in too? $1200 under actual MSRP seems typical, but it can be done better.

A lot of times you see people brag about insanely high prices off MSRP only to realize the got shafted on a trade in. Or that the sticker included other fees/options with higher margins.
