@cynicalrider do you have any input on the actuator situation? I should be able to get it out of @sente3s truck without taking a bunch of stuff off right?

 

Yeah good idea to ask a 1st gen vet. I don't want you to get to my place only for us to figure out we gotta remove CV axles and drop the diff or some PITA shit like that.

 

I'm not a fist gen expert but from my memories of my 96 and the pictures you posted it looks like you gotta take the steering rack out

 

How about put a Jack under the diff and loosen the mounting bolts and lower it slightly? Hard to tell from the pics

Steering rack! That's the name. I couldn't remember what that was called. That and the trans make the spot too small.

This is what I'm looking at right now. I believe it's what you can do on 2nd gens but I don't know enough about how diffs to tell. Working with limited knowledge is hard

Pulling the steering rack looks easier but I forget what mine looks like when I pulled the rack last time. I'm 95% sure the crossmember that holds the racks big U clamp would still be in the way. Seems like the only way to swap it is pulling the diff. I'll take a look when I get home and see. Taking the steering rack isn't exactly easy either if your shaft is seized to the rack.

 

The reason second gens have it so easy to swap the actuator is cause the steering rack is in front of the diff instead of behind it.

 

So toyota looked at the truck today and turns out it was the oil pump for the trans not the rear main seal. Because the exhaust I have is welded at the flange they have to cut it off in order to do the work but thats fine with me!

Yepp, that's how I've learned most of what I've learned. No better way to learn about cars than to buy one that isn't new and do your own work.
