Has anyone swapped out the oem stereo for an after market and it continued? I recently swapped my JBL head unit with a Kenwood that I was using just prior to buying the truck. Using an iDatalink maestro to retain all of the extra functions of the original head unit and steering wheel controls, there have been four times now that the Kenwood unit has rebooted. It's got me wondering if there is something on the can bus that is causing the reboots and not the oem unit itself.

Toyota still uses an actual ignition turn on wire for the radio. Unlike many other manufactures that get the turn in through a data network (Can Bus, LAN, ect). So I wouldn't believe that is the cause for the Kenwood rebooting.

But it does receives data through the can bus to the radio, i.e. tire pressure, check engine, etc. And it controls pieces of the ECU for lights, backup cam, and alerts. I'm thinking something gets corrupted and crashes the receiver.

I think it's just a coincidence. You could call Idatalink. They are awesome and they would be able to tell you

That's the thing I did call iDatalink. They couldn't explain it, especially since this was the same maestro unit and head unit that I used in the pervious car. This setup ran flawlessly for a year. Then 2 days after installation in the Tacoma it reboots 4 time. Way too much coincidence. I work in I.T. and I am comparing this to a dropped packet on a switch. My thought is that it's the same principal.

I wonder if the folks getting their radios replaced under warranty because of the reboots, if they are still experiencing the same problem.

I have no problems. When I go to entune on my phone, it says my vehicle head unit is AVN version + 13cy minor changes. What does yours say?

Operate it with can disconnected and see if you get the reset. Glitchy 12v power relay ? Get a data logger on the 12v line.

OEM headunit is not in the truck so I can't check version.

The Masetro unit handles the can bus so I don't want to be cutting wires. I was just curious if anyone else has had the same experience.

I have the maestro also. Just unplug the can connector.

    Great analogy!

The 2 people I know who did it, don't have issues anymore after Toyota swapped out the HU.

I spoke to the service rep 1-800 toyota guy named Dave Henkenius. He said there is a TSB out for the radio available now. I do not know the TSB # though. I also want the annoying seat squeak in the lumbar region in my driver seat fixed/replaced although, he said that was a characteristic of all the Tacomas !? WTF really......Does anyone else experience the seat squeak ?

I believe that TSB could be the one I posted (#89) https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/radio-reboots-constantly.445913/page-5#post-13138052
