As a marine i already have several people i know being mobilized this friday to help down there, my prayers go out to the population of Haiti as well as those going to assist in the clean up process.

i'm all for it too of course. maybe donate and post here with your amount, and we can call that a TW fund? Its the quickest way for money to get to where it needs to go.

 

my unit was potentially on the hook to be sent over there for disaster relief, and to be quite honest, im glad i didnt go

dont get me wrong they are all human and i love my fellow human and love helping them out, but its such a nasty place, so many diseases, not exactly the most sane of people either, ive picked up haitians trying to make it to the US by raft and they are just disgusting, peeing on themselves, etc.

again, im not trying to be insensitive, they deserve all the help they can possibly get and i hope for the best of them..

 

The quake was felt all the way over here, clearly nowhere close to the 7.0 Haiti got. I have a couple friends that were working over there, a local phone company expanded their operations to Haiti early last year, heard that one is accounted for so far two still missing.

I've seen Haiti a few times- and there isn't a place that was in a worse position for something like this to happen.
An already filthy and rundown place, packed densely with people and so close to turmoil everyday...and then this happens. It will be a LONG time and a LOT of money and effort to clean this up- if it ever happens.

Best of luck to the folks getting sent down there- I know a few already and would be on my way if I weren't still in training.

 

Aid - Money before cutting down on corruption would be a complete waste and counter productive to the people of Haiti - remove about 95% of the corruption and you would have a Mexico-like government.

Keep assistance to aid organizations that understand the corruption and know how to isolate themselves from the thievery. The people need the help - the governmental thieves should be left out of the equation. I hate to say it but this may provide an opportunity for the survivors to build a nation that serves it's people instead of the other way around.

American Red Cross
The American Red Cross' primary focus during the initial response of an emergency is feeding, sheltering and supplying any other basic needs. The money will go directly to relief efforts in Haiti. Or call 1-800-Red-Cross.

AmeriCares
This nonprofit disaster relief organization delivers medicine, medical supplies and aid to people in crisis around the world. To donate, call 1-800-486-HELP or go to AmeriCares.org. Donations will go toward medicine and medical supplies and for expenses for providing that medical aid.

Care
This humanitarian organization's main focus is to fight global poverty, specifically by empowering marginalized women and girls. To donate to the Haiti relief fund effort, go to Care.org or call 1-800-521-CARE. Money will go toward food, water and sanitation, shelter and emergency health response.

Direct Relief International
Direct Relief provides medical attention to those in need on an ongoing basis and in emergencies. Monetary donations go toward medical aid, supplies and equipment in Haiti. To donate, go to directrelief.org or call 805-964-4767 and 800-676-1638, or go through Google Checkout.

Medecins sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders)
The humanitarian organization delivers medical care to people caught in crisis. Donations to its Haiti relief efforts will go toward repairing the obstetrics and trauma hospitals in Haiti that were damaged in the earthquake. They also will go to transporting an additional 70 doctors and medical supplies to the island in an effort to set up makeshift emergency medical response centers. So far we have done two over flight. Both times we stayed down there for around 4 to 5 hrs. And it is unreal seeing the destruction first hand. I wish i could put some of the pictures we took but they wouldnt let me get a copy just yet. It is a complete mess down there. It looks like we will be doing a few more flights next week.
