If memory serves me correctly, that is just to keep large objects out of the pump. If you look to the lower left in thet photo, that is the pump and you have to remove the screw in the middle to access the culprit foam which is what everyone is removing. Then rplace that large cap like piece you asked about with the filter that was Amazon linked.

That is for the tundra. 10 years or 150k miles. I have no idea why the tundra gets a warrantee, but the Tacoma doesn't. It's the exact same system

Dumb question, but does the ECU need to sense a certain flow volume from the pump? If not, can we just wire in a random, similar size air pump?

I'm holding off, until my emissions warranty has expired. Don't want to do anything to jeopardize warranty coverage.

I picked up the new version of the Hewitt Tech bypass and the pump replacement pack for my '12 and got rid of the pump all together. Used that newly founded room for a second battery.

This, exactly. There is no filter in that stove inlet piece. The chunk of foam filter is inside the lid, under a single screw, as described above.

Just inspected mine -- foam filter chunk is intact and soft/pliable, no debris or foam bits inside the check valve, all good. Will re-check every 2 years. May be relevant to note that my truck has been garaged most of its life and has it pretty easy in general.

Here are pics... First pic is the main air pump housing, after removing the single screw and cover; second pic is the inside of the cover with foam filter block; the last one shows the foam a little better. The light-colored square shape on the side of the foam is what the filter trapped, looks like fuzz or hair and a little dust and dirt. Nothing noteworthy, and pretty clean for 10 years old. I really like the crankcase breather mod but I'm leaving the foam for now. It's super easy to check and mine is doing great.

The air pump is mounted to the fender well, under the hood, directly in front of the airbox (2.7L engines)
See my post directly above yours, with 3 pictures.

The 4.0 has the pump behind the air box on the passenger side against the fender.

This, I kept the original foam piece as well as the end cap of the inlet pipe that blocks big pieces entering. Everything can be returned back to stock without issue. Dont wait on this, people are not getting this stuff easily replaced under emissions warranty.
