If he's going to help you with welding or whatever, no worries. I won't be offended if you don't make it

Sorry to say but your only options are pulling the rack or the diff. If you go the rack route make sure you straighten the rack fully, and lock the steering wheel in place. If you reinstall a spline off on the internediate shaft you will be driving with a cockeyed steering wheel.

2-3 hours tops with air tools and two people I think. I would go pulling the diff route. Remove the 4 lbj bolts on each side, pop the cv's from the diff but leave them in the spindles, and drain and drop the diff. Make sure you use blue loctite on the lbj bolts when you put them back. I would also mark the bolts with a paint pen so @sente3 can make sure they aren't backing out. Lbj failures are really common on first gen's due to lbj failure or one bolt backing out and the rest shearing

@sente3 spray all the above mentioned bolts with pb blaster frequently between now and when I get there. Get some blue lock tite and a paint pen. Do you have Jack stands and a decent Jack? Get oil for the diff 75w90 I think it is, and hopefully you have a drain pan too

I agree tho dropping the diff sounds better than pulling the rack. We can get it done

Oh and you'll probably need to disconnect the front driveshaft too. only 4 nuts I think. Could probably leave it on but it would make it easier. I've never actually pulled my diff, but this is what I would do if it was me. @ToyRyd04 any other advice?

@sente3 since your going to be there, check your steering rack's bushings. I changed mine this summer. Everything underneath our trucks wear quicker because of the winters here.
