Had the TSB done in conjunction with the 5,000 mile 1st service. At first the service writer said "Oh- It's normal for the tranny to shift a lot in cruise mode.. It's optimizing the gears. Plus there is no TSB for a tranny update.."

So I whipped out the TSB.

It went back in to see the service tech for 30 minutes.

WOW! Much smoother shifting on the 20 mile ride home! No hard upshifts, buttery smooth. Didn't try cruise control. will do that later today. I feel I can drive it 'D' mode now (not the manual settings).

I'm from Canada and took mine in today for the recall since it seems to never want to shift into a higher gear. It rarely sees 6th gear and will downshift into third and stay there for way too long.

Got a call from the dealership today saying they couldn't find anything wrong and that the shift points were normal....

Not sure what to do now..

Really wishing I got the 6 speed manual

This is the one thin I really hate about this truck

Just give them the Canadian TSB number (TCI-4419) and tell them you have some of the symptoms. My dealer just said ok and did the flash.

It would be nice if the display could be set to show what gear you are in, other then just 'D', would make it easier to prove issues and record it.

    None....yet!
Dropped mine off this morning. I have a 7/16 build date. They did the tranny update and had to add a half quart of tranny oil. Pedersens Toyota in Ft. Collins CO was really easy to work with and had I push back on doing the work. Have to agree it made a big difference on how it drives in town. More get up n go...smoother shifts/no searching for gears. Hope it lasts! 1200 miles

Damn these wait times you and others are experiencing for the TSB flash. Stopped by the dealership on my way to the beach. The tech said "give me a minute to reach a stopping point" on another vehicle on which he was doing a brake job. Shortly after he pulled my Tacoma into a service bay and after 2 bags of their free pop corn and a Coke he came in as said "all done" (1/2 hour). Truck runs great, gets 25-26 on the hwy (60-70 mph: state 2-lane roads where speed limit is 55). I know this sounds stupid on my part (and it probably is) but I have rarely used that transmission assist (can't remember what the button is called) even when pulling my enclosed MC trailer. Not sure what its purpose is....

Took mine in for this, transmission was low on fluid. They added fluid and the issues are gone. I don't know if they actually did the TSB. It's not on my ticket. Anyway it feels much better! :)

so I took mine in to check tranny fluid at 1k miles and they slightly argued that they have never heard of this issue and have never gotten a taco in for service before 4500 miles on it before, that I would have to pay for everything and that I also need a rental cuz the fluid is too hot for service and need to keep it over night.
so I said fine I'll roll the dices and if u check it and there's no issue I'll pay for rental and service..
but if it's low on fluid then I don't pay a dime for service or the rental.

    side note:
I god damn beat the shit out of the 2015 v6 Camry!

well they called me back the next day at 3pm and said come pick up your vehicle were all done, it was 1qt low on trans fluid...they were very surprised and said from now on they will check every TRD OR that comes in from now on.(they say that but I doubt it)

it felt much better on all shifts.

but I didn't know about the tranny T-SB-0077-16 so I'll get that done at my 5k

I'm having the same problem, clunks when coming fast to a stop and seems to lurch forward when doing so. But after about 5 mins of driving the clunk and lurging goes away. Not sure what it is as well and am thinking th dealer might have a hard time duplicating this issue.

Just had the update this morning and very pleased. I "was" having issues of slow incremental takeoffs with heavy acceleration.

Also when accelerating it stayed in high gear far too long.

Also when pulling my boat "about 4k lbs" when at a dead stop on a steep incline even full pedal press would not allow it to drop to low gear so it barely crawled instead.

I havent tested with my boat yet but all else is excellent with fast smooth acceleration like it should. Now very slight press of pedal will prompt a lower gear and it takes less pedal travel to move things.

Seems a wiser use of gears..... More like how a skilled driver would use if driving manual.

I will now see if there is a gas mileage hit! ☺️

I had the update done. I mostly noticed the shifting issues in cruise control on hilly roads prior to the latest TSB. Everything seems to be in order except that I now have a new issue. From a cold start with the truck sitting over night, I experience an aggressive rev of the RPM when shifting from gear 1 to 2 for the first time. It is slight, almost to the point of wondering if it was imagined the first time it happens. I did see it happen several other times. I will attempt to record it next time, but the rev is maybe one or two hash marks for about a second and then all goes back to normal.

Took mine in for this. They said low fluid in Transmission. Problems are gone now.
Not sure if they did the reprogramming or not. It was not on my invoice.

I had this issue - mine was also downshifting into third so hard that it would literally allow me to slow to a stop without applying the brakes. Toyota had my truck for over a week. They overfilled my transmission to see if there was a valve issue and then drained and reset the tranny fluid level to stock. They also did a complete memory reset on my transmission and did the TSB over again. It is SO much better. I still notice a slight hesitation to let out of third and shift into second if I'm coasting to a stop, but I think I only notice it because I'm paranoid about every little thing this truck does given all of my previous issues.

This happened to me too. Toyota sent someone to my dealership to help and they said that some of the Tacomas aren't accepting the TSB the way they should and that they've had to do a complete hard reset of the computer and then do the TSB for it to stay... for that that's worth.

I find the shift from third to fourth happens far too soon - around town I keep it in S mode in third and manually upshift to fourth, as needed.

After reading about the problems with the 3rd gen 6 speed automatic, and the low fluid level some have found, I contacted the dealer I bought the truck from yesterday and voiced my concerns about the trans fluid level in my new 2017 being correct.

I asked them if they had performed a visual inspection of the trans fluid level which they said they did not. The service rep than said that they could hook the truck up to a computer and to see if the trans fluid level was good, but if the computer said it was good I would have to pay around $135, and if it said it was low there would be no charge.

I told the service rep that I felt that I should not have to pay for having the proper amount of trans fluid verified on a trans that I cannot check and which have not checked. I also mentioned all of the posts from this forum about low fluid levels and shifting problems that people have had with new 3rd gen Tacoma's.

The service rep I spoke to even said he was a member here, and I said that you then must be aware of my concerns about the trans fluid level in my brand new Tacoma possibly not being correct.

So I decided to call up Toyota Corporate and start a claim with them after expressing my concerns about not knowing if my trans has the proper amount of trans fluid, especially since mine has a the two package which has been mentioned here could cause the fluid level to be low due to the plumbing to the trans cooler and the cooler itself. I also told the rep from Toyota that I wanted the trans fluid level in my truck verified by a visual inspection and not with a computer.

I also told them that from a stop my trans shifts to 2nd, 3rd and into 4th gear by the time I barely get over 30 mph, which seems ridiculous to me, and at speeds between 50 and 65 mph it seems to upshift and down shift frequently with hardly any change in the gas pedal.

So I have an appointment next week to take it in and have them perform a visual trans fluid level inspection, as well as find out why the trans is shifting into 4th gear at 30 mph.
