Any of you guys part of the group that went to ride with Georgia Overland in Talladega today?

 

I was supposed to go but my truck had to have some emergency repairs this week..

 

I installed an OME lift kit on my 2011 DCSB. Now I'm ready for whatever the mall parking lot throws at me.

 

It's been a while so I thought I'd bump this with a question.

Looking to build an AR, you guys have any good links on where to buy stuff or any advice?

Palmetto state armory is your best bet.

I'm biased to bravo company, best upper I've ever had.

 

So my roommate told me to get 223 wylde because it can shoot 223 and 5.56 better than a 5.56 can shoot a 223. Plus 223 is cheaper. Listen to him or just get one or the other?

 

I think he has it backwards:

Pressure is the primary difference separating the .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm. The .223s are loaded to lower pressures and velocities compared to 5.56mm. Due to its lower pressure, you can safely fire .223 Rem. ammunition in a 5.56mm chambered gun; however, the same cannot be said in reverse.

 

That's what I had found as well. So I think I'm going to go with a 5.56 instead.

 

make sure you make your AR full auto.... remember it says shall not be infringed...

 

Yes, a 5.56x45mm can fire a .223 - not the other way around.

Here is the definition of the Wylde chamber:

The .223 Wylde chamber is not a caliber, it is a barrel specification. All .223 Wylde chambered rifles are capable of firing both .223 Remington and 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition. The Wylde chamber is considered a "match" quality chambering and produces accuracy levels that are comparable in both calibers.


Depending on your use, pick the appropriate chamber.

Note, that a 5.56 firing a .233 might not be as accurate as a .223 firing a .223.

 

I knew it wasn't a caliber and it was more of the barrel. But I think I'm going to get a 5.56, because I've seen more of those available compared to the Wylde. Plus I'll use the .223 just to shoot at the range so accuracy is a meh. Save the 5.56 for other reasons.

If you don't plan on match shooting with this gun, the Wylde chamber is not really necessary.

Thoughts on these uppers? Pretty much comes down to which rail I like the best. Not sold on these yet, still doing research

 

I like them both. Unless you really want a 'customized-down-to-the-bone' AR, I'd just buy a good complete one like the Smith and Wesson M&P (they're like $600). That way, you can take off the parts you don't want and replace them with parts you do want. Now if you want something completely tricked out, build it from scratch, which sounds like the route you wanna go. God bless your wallet lol.

 

I've bought a couple of PSA lowers that have been solid. The blemished models are $10-20 cheaper, and they look pretty perfect to me so far.
