Just before taking the truck to the dealer, take out some trans fluid - thereby guaranteeing that it will indeed require filling.. And if they say it's fine, you KNOW that they are full of poop!

Attached is my previous post above. I hooked my 2016 Tacoma up to my boat and found it wouldn't pull it down the highway. My previous 2014 Taco pulled it great. I disconnected the boat and went to my dealer and told them I need my 2014 back (luckily they still had it) and we agreed on a deal that was acceptable to both parties. Kudos to my dealer for getting me back into my old truck!

I'll be weighing my options and decide what my next choice will be. I may wait a bit and see if the posts about the sifting issues go away or I'll be looking at a Colorado or possibly a full size Ford or Chevrolet which gets about the same MPG (all my fill ups were between 12.5 to 13.4) and can pull my boat.

My advice to Tacoma buyers is beware, beware, beware, and take it for a very long test drive and if it feels awkward and not right, run away!!!

As a previous person quoted "Are you listening Toyota!!!!!"

More feedback, going uphill in 4x4 also is smooth now.
So far I have no complaints.. Only delights...
My firmware was dated July 16

Also I still get about 18 mpg , if I drive like grandma I get 20ish.

Pulling my boat knocks it down to 12.5 - 13mpg

I just had my TSB done this morning. They stated that they were only able to find the shifting from reverse to drive delay to be an issue with my truck. Though as soon as I took it on the highway back home in cruise - I can tell you there was a big difference.

Although I had asked them to do a transmission fluid check they never gave me a straight answer if they did or not. It's not in the paperwork. they just kept saying everything is good now (They had my truck for 5 hours). I think I may take it to another dealer to have it done if anymore problems present themselves.

As for the gas milage issues. I had been averaging 16.5mpg's mainly - highway driving. I'm definitely hoping that improves now.

Interesting.... I have a 3/2 lift and oversized tires too "cooper's", if I'm consistent highway I get close to 20mpg

I guess he is right, first dealer I went to said mine was at the right level. Than I went to my close by dealer and they found it overfilled. Go figure...

I haven't had mine done yet, but I'm thinking just getting rid of the R to D delay alone is worth the time suck of taking it in...

I never experienced that, I heard it happens only when cold. I always warm up my truck.

I just spoke with a service advisor and told him my symptoms, which are the delayed engagement from P-R-D with a pretty decent lurch and a rough downshift when coasting and letting off the gas.

I asked them to manually check the transmission fluid since they do not come with dip sticks and the service advisor said that they aren't allowed to check the transmission fluid because it's a "closed system" which is BS. They are not supposed to open the "closed system" until it has been 5 years or 90,000 miles. Just because it's a closed system does not mean they are unable to check the fluid. They can wait overnight until the fluid cools down and warm it up and check it the following morning.

The only thing he said was that I can drop it off and they will try and recreate the issues and see if maybe there is a software update but other than that, they can't do anything.

I'm curious to see what will happen after the software update if it gets any better...

Other than calling Toyota and filing a case, are there any other suggestions anyone could offer? I may try and take it to another Toyota dealership and see what they say...

I don't think I sound paranoid. I've had 9 Tacoma's with no problems, however this one never did shift correctly so I gave up on it. Loved the truck but hated the shifting and couldn't pull my small boat in a higher gear than 3rd. It seldom seen 5th gear and almost never seen 6th driving empty down the highway. Doesn't sound right to me for a $41,000 truck.

I think there's an issue with the shifting and a sales person leveled with me that no one wants to sell one since they keep coming back. Mine had 400 miles on it when I and I suspect it was returned previously before also.

Does anyone have a Gen 3 that doesn't have/had shifting issues?

The dealer I am going to tomorrow is supposedly going to do a visual check on the trans fluid. How long will I have to sit and wait for that, seeing I was not going to leave the truck with them?

Mine was weird "before" the update, now I'm happy.

I dont understand it being able to revert back unless that's another problem or its defective... A chip cannot revert itself back to an earlier firmware on its own.

Really? Mine has been about 2K since the update and its still sooo much better than it was. I only ever even "notice" it once in a blue moon..and that usually caused by shit traffic where I live (eg I start getting after it to accelerate onto the interstate but the durka durka in front of my thinks they are back in Somalia where apparently they merge onto high speed roads at 30, so I have to get on the brakes or let off the gas. The poor transmission doesnt know wtf to do. I dont even blame it.)

I think there are lots of people that are happy with the new truck. That being said, also I admit I lifted my 16 and bigger tires, but this being my 8th new Tacoma, I think any of my other trucks including my 2011 that I still have and drive everyday for work would have handled my modifications much easier and better than this new 3rd gen! I think these trucks were geared wrong from the get go and probably are also programmed wrong. Mostly in the name of epa standards!
