The hood issue is probably one of the most perplexing issues out there right now. I can't say much on it (for confidentiality purposes) but I do know that there have been 3rd gens successfully Lemon Lawed and Toyota HQ is saying they still have no idea how to fix the problem. At least the Regional Tech reps have mentioned they have solutions in work for the leafs and the rear end howling coming down the line. Vibrations also seem to be a varying issue in significance, frequency and symptom. Some have mild vibrations when driving at the 1800 to 2200 RPM range which can be felt in the pedal and steering wheel, others are experiencing more extreme vibrations (such as a rumble strip feeling) when coming to a stop, applying brakes, etc. There are other vibration symptoms being reported here too but cannot recall the details. Point is, "vibration issues" is a general term for the third gen and can differ based on driver experience yet Toyota has not come out to really acknowledge or offer a solution for them to my recollection. These vibrations have also led to third gen lemon law cases. The more we kick and scream and raise issue with dealers and corporate, the sooner they will be forced to hear us and pursue resolutions for the issues.

The hood issue is likely an aeroelasticity problem. Simply put, aeroelasticity occurs when a non rigid structure (like our flimsy hood sheet metal) is subject to nonuniform fluid forces (like varying wind speed and air pressure scenarios). Toyota need to look to the aircraft industry to properly understand the issue. See this for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3-g9B6Fgjs

Do car makers perform road and track testing on new cars and trucks Seems to me something like this would have revealed itself during test runs. Then again maybe it has to do with the changing of part suppliers If that is the case you still should have some sort of testing performed

Interesting... I thought it was only the "new" 8.75's and not the "old" 8's that had the howling issue. Apparently not!

Or am I getting confused which diff is on which truck? Is there a listing somewhere?

They do some testing for sure. However, I personally doubt the testing is adequate. The Project Engineers are likely getting driven too hard by the schedule pushers and cost reducers and are likely compromised by this. This is a global problem now. I see it everyday. Toyoda (a great man) is rolling in his grave right now.

The diff is new in all the models, no carry over from 2nd gens. And in the diff howl thread there's limiteds, sports, DCLBs, off roads and sr5s affected, trying to rule out one model or another has been irrelevant.

Pretty sure there is carry over if you have a 2.7...

My axle code is A06A. Which, if my source is correct, means I have an 8" open with 4.3 gears.

Cross referenced an online parts catalog and the 2.7 vs 3.5 is indeed a different P/N.

No love for the 4 cylinders, but it looks like we're sneaking under the radar of all these new gen woes!

There you go, but they don't make a 2.7 DCLB, nor a sport or off road 2.7, so yes, you snuck under radar. 3.5 axle seems to have issue then.

Some of the hood vibration issues are so bad it literally looks like the hood is going to fly off of the truck and decapitate somebody on the side of the highway. There have been cases where MULITPLE hoods were replaced on the same vehicle only to result in the same issue. It's a brand new, nearly $40K truck.... I expect it to function normally without a hood that looks like it's going to fly off.

I agree. My hood flutter amplitude is quite small, and i figured that is what everyone is talking about.

You mean the pansies who are willing to spend $40k and then deal with bullshit issues like hood flutters? " Oh golly. I wouldn't want to make a stink. I'll just deal with it."

I'm really not sure which "pansy" is worst.

I also spent a lot of money on this truck, but products are products. If you expect perfection for $40k then you have a tough life ahead of you. As i said, it appears my hood flutter is more of a vibration, not resembling a california condor attempting take off after a big mac.
