Manual Tranny Gear Oil recommendations

Goinging to change out all the manual trans & Differential gear oil on my 2001 Tacoma TRD 4X4 which has 112K on it, not sure if it was ever done. The Service manual specifies the following grades & quantities

Transmission: API GL-4 or GL-5 75W-90 (2.6 Quarts)
Transfer Case: API GL-4 or GL-5 75W-90 (1.1 Quarts)
Front Differential: Hypoid API GL-5 75W-90 (1.2 Quarts)
Rear Differential: Hypoid API GL-5 80W-90 (3.2 Quarts)

What do you guys recommend? Looks like I need 2 gallons so the synthetic route would be pretty expensive considering

Mobil 75W-90 is about $10 quart.

I went with For my 01 pre-runner, I drained the OEM (it came out looking like white milk--thicker than milk and along the same pour speed as a new bottle of motor oil) and used Red Line Synthetic Oil 50304 - Red Line MT-90 Transmission Gear Oil, 75W90 which his a GL-4. I would stay away from GL-5. I am not sure if there are any brass parts in the Taco tranny (like syncros), but GL-5 contains heavy (extreme pressure) additives that eat away at brass.

I had the a problem where I heard like metal on metal when I shifted from 1 to 2...not quite so smooth shifting. I hated to shift into second since I could hear the crunch.

I was not quite sure what it was, but after changing to the MT-90, I never had any more problems. It's been like 15k and I never felt it that crunch again.

I did not know of any local retailers so opted for online. I would not nickel and dime with fluids like this. Also, don't think you mean 2 gallons. 4 quarts equals 1 gallon. You only need 2.6 quarts. I only needed two quarts. It would be safe to buy either 3 or 4. Your Taco will thank you.

 

I plan on running all Redline fluids sometime soon (probably when it warms up haha)

The trans and tcase will be getting MT-90, the diffs will be getting

i have never changed mine, can someone direct me to where the drain plug is located and what is the recommended fluid to use

 

I run redline mt90 in the tranny and transfer case. I run redline

He's changing all fluids, not just tranny...

 

Recommended fluid has already been stated.

The fill and drain plugs are thin headed 24mm(I think) bolts. Tranny drain is directly on the bottom and the fill is.....oh wait your second gen....this is first gen forum...

 

So I use mt-90 in the tranny but was gunna go with a GL-5 for the transfer. Should I not and stick with GL-4? Is there brass in the transfer case.

 

Hes doing em all....so he needs just shy of 2 gallons....

 

I pit mt-90 on trany and both transfercases is that bad at all and id what to do any more change the oil to mt-90 did on all trany and trans cases and put new tubin alll in car changed batt wires to a thiler gage cuzz no gud cunductuvity and 3 point spark plugs found the shortage it had in the fuel injuctors re did the wires and did plastic tape liquidnon all electrical components so water dont mess whit the car wires and changed master cinlender whit the cylender and bleed it well and stiil no gêadr go i looks like it wants to shut own wen i try to put intoany gear and

 

Most manual trans guys will recommend Redline MT-90. It's expensive but it does a great job.

 

Is it bad if I did all the transmission and gear boxes with the transfers all the same mt90 is it bad if all the same words are the same or they have to be different if so I will have to change them I'm about to do the transmission clutch replacement I'm actually going with an aftermarket stage 2 stage 3 clutch which is more toward more power to sense so I'll let you guys know how that works out my truck still doesn't go into gear so basically like I said I changed everything cylinder master cylinders starters because I had a shortage which was kind of my starter if anybody has a tortoise and your car will kill the starter all the time which the car won't start so did you guys know how to change my Sheraton turns out I went with that aftermarket clutch hopefully it right soon as I can put it on and I got all the utensils to take care of that myself a recommendation before take tranny off or mods that I should add while transmission is down

 

Howdy y’all. This is my first 1st gen forum post, so thanks in advance. I have. A 2003 Tacoma 3.4L/manual with 238k on it. I live on the Oregon coast, so it doesn’t get that cold, but sometimes freezes. As of late, I have been needing to warm up my rig for about 10min before it will shift into gear. I’m going to start with the tranny fluid and looks like Redline MT 90 is the go to from what I have read. Is the GL 4 what I should use? If anyone has any other thoughts about maintenance I should do with this mileage, all will be appreciated!

Yep, that's the way to go.

PS make sure you have a pump with a tube that fits inside the fill holes. Suction gun should work well.

Also do NOT drain until you verify you can open the fill plugs!
