I agree, if you have nothing to compare to and no qualitative assessment of the numbers, then it's difficult to know what it means.

That's why I liked the Blackstone report I had done three years ago. They provided the quantitative numbers and then interpreted what they meant in their written assessment/notes as well as providing averages for my engine type. They also assessed the TBN additives level and stated their opinion that the figures reflected that I could do a substantially longer interval.

It's $28 for one report, we're not talking a fortune here. Have a look at samples here: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/report-explanation.php

Or wait a few months for when the truck I ordered comes in and I get enough miles on it to do a test. I'll likely remember to post up the results to whichever incarnation of an oil thread is going on at the time.

I ran my GTI over 1000 miles at 125 mph, did 4 laps on the Nurburgring(my upgraded brakes caught on fire on lap 4) and did an oil change at a 10k interval. Sent the oil to get analyzed and it came back with plenty of life left. Oil change interval isn't the big deal it used to be with the advancement of oil and engines in the last couple of years.

I'd probably do the 1st oil change earlier than 10K. But as long as you use quality synthetic oil 10K is probably conservative after that. That is what I did, although I do change the filter at 5K. After 9 years and 173,000 miles I still never never add oil except when changing either the oil or filter. You'll find lots of folks using this schedule with well over 200,000 miles and no issues.

I'm glad to hear this because I use to check my oil all the time. I bought my 1st Toyota truck 10 months ago and could not see the oil level on the stick I started not worrying about checking my oil either. Even after a thousand miles or so the oil gets darker and you can see it on the stick but at the point where the oil tube bends, oil gathers at that spot so you cannot get a accurate reading anyhow.

I'm relying on the dependability of Toyota's 2.7 engine. (Without crossing my fingers.)

    I Agree
The dipstick doesn't read the level, just let's us check out the color. They could include a chart in the owners manual

I guess I should be thankful for my one lubricant diagnostic tool. Toyota forgot the other one

A guy on here told me he takes his dipstick out of the tube for 10 to 15 minutes so the oil runs out of the tube. Then he puts the dipstick back in and checks his oil just fine. I live in a apt. building and I'm not going out to pull my dipstick then close the hood, go back inside for 10 minutes or so then go raise my hood and check my oil.

Yeah a guy should just be able to pull the dipstick out and read the level and be on his way. I have owned several cars/vans/trucks throughout the years and this is the 1st one I cannot just pull the dipstick out and check the oil level. Even after it sits for 5 days oil is still congregated in the bend of the tube. Sucks...

So don't go inside. You've got plenty of other junk you should be regularly checking, too. Pull the stick, then inspect your blinkers/taillights/brake lights, etc. Torque check your lugnuts. Fill up your washer fluid. Clean the french fries out from under the passenger seat or the beer cans from the bed. Then, check your oil dipstick thingy.

All is good. You must have faith in your Toyota built engine!

Have not had a beer can in my hand in 16 years this 15th of September. No french fries in the truck either. She is a street princess.
