You have a lot of good points @Techoma This is why I've ask the AZ TW peeps. I know I can do a lot of exploring in my truck as is but not everything. I think I just need to get it a little better equipped for now till I have the cash to have a dedicated 4x4. Which in reality I would rather have anyways. The more I've read on the conversion the more complicated it sounds too and I just can't have my truck down that long anyways. (Real life problems)
    Thanks for looking out!

I did the tree 4x4 mod. Only bad thing was having the truck for just over 9 years, I grew fond of it. Old Blue got me places, but also got me stuck places because of 4x2 problems. 157k on it and no issues on the 06 other than reg. maintenance on the truck due to mileage. With that said, I love my 4x4. I've been to many more places with it so far than I could ever dream of without 4x4. I dont care that i have put just over 20k on the '12 since getting it in Nov last year. I have seen so much because of the extra 2 tires having power to them. Is the possibility of getting stuck still with 4x4 versus 4x2......yes of course, but less likely in many ways, but the risk is still there.

I'm going to buy a SxS to fulfill my need for a 4x4 vehicle. One of the fears I had with my Jerp Wrerngler was breaking my junk on the trail and being stuck out in the middle if nowhere. I'm over that, I'd rather have my shiny, reliable truck parked at a trailhead or nearby parking lot waiting to haul my fatass and running (or broken) offroad toy home.

Waiting until you can afford a 4x4 is a good plan.

2wd drivers are either the best or shittiest drivers I know. Some have been out and doing with only 2wd and learned variable lessons. While others think they have 4wd and over compensate to make them a scary ass driver.

I was taught to only use 4wd for 2 things: to deal with a small obstacle that you can see the exit and to get unstuck. When you get stuck in 2wd, you always have 4wd to help get unstuck. You get stuck in 4wd and you are out of wheels to get unstuck with.

If I were you, get out as much as you can and learn the vehicle. Buy recovery gear first so others can help you get out of anything you get stuck in, you will get stuck. Then start building up your truck a little. Don't ever go out alone.

There were many times i wanted to turn my prerunner into a 4x4. Cash, donor vehicle, time, no how, and a extra dd hindered that. If I would rather buy a 4x4 than do the conversion. So many things being changed out. Not paying attention to one thing or not realizing you forgot one thing to the whole assy, and something horrible can go wrong.

Winch and a locker in a 2WD will get a skilled driver far further than a shitty driver with 4WD, crawl control, 4 speed Atlas, etc.
