So what's to say an '08 ECU wouldn't work in a '15 Tacoma?

I'm right there with ya.. I just WISH there was something you could do to tune these things.. I want more power out of my 2011, but there is basically NOTHING, unless you supercharge, and even then, you still cant tune it to make the best of it. I mean I did supercharge my old chevy.. and yes, I ended up spending like 14 grand on the motor when it was said and done. But I can tune in anything I want.. there just seems to be absolutely NOTHING for my 2011. Yes I would like to put on headers and maybe better exhaust. But if I cant tune out the codes, and actually make use of the ugrades, then whats the point. there has to be something out there that can do some good. You read posts about, you can do this or you can do this but it will need tuning.. But you cant tune it.... that doesn't make sense, and pisses me off

Someone has got the Ucon to work on 09+ to allow custom tuning. Lots of custom wiring though, I think there is a thread somewhere on here. Not for the faint of heart. There is no plug and play solution for 09+.

SC would be a lot easier for packaging in such a tight engine bay (I have plenty of space above the motor since its mounted extremely low for better CG) but turbos are what I prefer. Not to mention getting an SC is really big money.

I put ported LS6 heads and larger cam as well as LS7 lifters and oversized chromoly pushrods on earlier this year which added quite a bit more power on top, so we shall see, if I can find a good deal on an SC I would go that route but Im not paying $5K for one, I can build my own custom turbo setup for half that and make more power as well.

How, exactly? People often talk about "tuning" a motor but don't seem to know what that means. You don't need a tune for inake/exhaust; your ECU keeps the A/F in check on its own. Even if you bump the ignition timing it's not gonna get you any noticeable more. I don't know if the VVT-i on these is electronically controlled. Even if it is, it's not gonna be a big boost in power.

Now if you're talking about a forced induction engine with electronic boost control, that's a whole different story. In that case you can get a hell of a lot more power.

I'm not trying to single you out or give you a hard time. Just explaining for others.

Timing will give you more power or take away power. It is intantly noticeable.

    https://youtu.be/Zzn3-ygH-v8

On rough average, 1 degree added timing equates to 10 hp.

If you have an AFR gauge attached, and your vehicle is running in the 10's or richer, then bumping that up to the mid 12's AFR will create more hp as well. A lot of factory open loop tunes, run in the 10's.

Tuning in a couple degrees of timing, as well as refining to a proper AFR will net a good pick-up in whp. Regardless of N/A or F/I.

1 degree of timing doesn't affect the output by 10hp on the 1GR.

Our engines run in closed loop at normal throttle positions and hold the AFR right around 14.7. At WOT and decel they're open loop and show 12.1 and 18.1. Pretty much ideal for a normal street car.

I said roughly, as an rough average acros the board. Not specific to the 1GR. But true, that it won't be 10 whp for the N/A app. Mine, as my own example, has never been in the 12's with the factory tune in open loop @ WOT. Decel, off throttle is in fuel cut, so it doesn't matter for this conversation.

The point is, with a tunung device as simple as the MAF-CAL, adjusting the timing and AFR's will gain a nice pick up in power over the oem tune. As well as get better open loop fuel economy.
