image.jpg I did not see a post on this, what version do you have? My truck was built in 2015 and delivered December 2015. If there is an update for 2016, I think I could make an argument for a free update on my 10k service. It is a 2016 truck, map data should be 2016 at no fee.

You wanted them to install 2016 maps in mid 2015?

You can argue away. And someone might do it to make you go away. But it won't be based on your logic.

:gossip: 'cause he knows Toyota charges for updates, and he wants his for free

It's one of the several reasons why I'll stick with a portable unit.

I understand it was not available in 2015. I am just saying it is a 2016 truck and if there is an update, Toyota dealership should do a complementary update. I'm am not sure if there even is a newer version available, hence the question posted to 2016-17 owners. It is just an SD card. I don't want to use Scout due to data usage.

Damn. I just did some quick research. $160-@220 for map updates?!?!?! Toyota is missing the mark. Why would people buy their upgraded nav systems when its going to cost them 2x more than a portable with automatic (free) updates? Hell, I just use waze on my phone.

It's this way for almost every car manufacturer when you get the NAVI. Not sure why this is news to folks unless it's their first factory NAVI based vehicle. My corvette, 200, and Passat all had these when I had them in the motor stable and all of them needed upgraded at a charge, I just said the hell with it since I rarely used it to begin with. I get it more for convenience when I do need a map.

New Nav updates for Toyota become available each year in October. Next service, ask if they'll do it for you while they're already plugged into your vehicle. Some Dealerships/Service Advisors/Techs will do it no-charge... Doesn't hurt to ask!

Wow.... I guess i'll update every couple of years.

on a side note, For Honda vehicles with Garmin navigation, a user gets 5 years of map updates at no cost.

Once you try Android Auto/Apple Carplay, factory Nav is simply not worth it.

My wife's Toyota has it and we've used it maybe twice.

The maps on your phone are always up to date (one of the main reasons GPS manufacturers now allow free updates. They used to charge for updates too) and some features are just not on a standalone GPS.

Waze is soon coming to Android Auto. Love the real time traffic and how you even get the reason for the traffic problem, i.e., an accident, an officer waiting to hand out fast driver awards, someone spilled a Coke and the paper cup is slowing 2 lanes.

Thank you, Nylaia, this answers my question. So everyone in a 2016 and newer should be on the same version as mine. I don't use it much in Iowa, just wanted the latest version. I don't plan to pay for updates in the future.

Thats what I've done on my other car with nav. Any critical routing I use my phone for, and I use the inbuilt nav more just for situational awareness; e.g. if I turn right here I can hit a parallel street and get around this short backup.

Though on that car it seems each year someone posts up the data downloads and some overseas dealer entities will sell the VIN based activation code for $50.

Still, it isn't like the roads move around all that often. Mostly they seem to stay put and I've usually been able to figure out minor stuff on the fly like when they turn a four way stop into a round-about.

Having had a window smashed out and expensive GPS stolen, I much prefer inbuilt nav. Yes, the GPS and its mount were off the windshield and in the glovebox.

I use both a Garmin and the Nav on the truck. On a trip south to Seattle I ended up using only the Garmin. I am used to it and the Toyota system seamed to struggle a bit. For what I paid for the truck I won;t be [paying for updates when the Garmins are now free.

    Take Care

I have a 2017 and it has the may 2015 183 version. I was just at the dealer and he said it's 169 for the card and 160 for them to install it. He said they have to use the tech stream tool. I called bullshit and left.
