I would really look into the overall condition, and miles of what you're looking to buy. With my first gen, I nearly spent more than my current truck payments, just keeping everything working correctly.

I'm kind of doing that with my used truck right now. Playing catch up from the previous owners neglect but no matter how to square it owning a truck out right makes way way more sense than being balls deep in payments.

I paid 10k for my 2nd gen with 140k on the clock.

Since I've owned it I've had to

Replace shift lever, brake job, lower control arms and next weekend I will be doing a wheel bearing/hub and a CV axle and before the new year I will do a whole clutch job. So that's about $1000 in parts that I knew when I got the truck I'd have to spend.... really used is the only way to go IF you do your own work on your truck.

The hard part for me was finding time to work on it. I admittedly took it to a mechanic buddy a few times because it had been broken for to long, and I just couldn't find the time to mess with it.

My second gen has low miles, and acts like a new truck. It costs me more, but it's worth it to me because it's never been broke down.

It all depends on your schedule and financial situation.

I understand that sometimes people will pay for the convenience of owning a newer truck.

I took a Jeep I had to a transmission shop one time when a roller bearing was going bad. I got quoted a price to fix it and that night the transmission was sitting on my kitchen table and I rebuilt it myself. Ever since then I've always "paid myself" when it comes to my trucks and anything other than bottom end work on an engine I will take on myself to save the money and learn a lot in the process too.

I've found a few 4runners in the 6500-8000 range with under 160k miles. Thats one thing that has crossed my mind and its one reason for selling the 2006 is because some more costly maintenance was starting too come up. Even if I have to drop 2k in maintenance I'll still have it paid for with money in the bank. Plus it can be fully built, and able to get a DD to drive back and forth to work and school.

That's why I bought the first gen. Hopefully, you get luckier than I did with the amount of repairs needed.

Just tossing the idea around. Going to wait until I actually get moved into the house in Huntsville and see how things are before I crunch numbers and see where I'm at.

Car hopping in general to me is a bad idea. You lose money every time unless you find a good one and just flip it. If you can get more for your 15 then what you paid and upgraded on it then no harm, but anything less just keeps building.

Has anybody eaten the Mountain house camping food before? This might be a possibility for me during the moab trip.

Thanks, I used the Bilstein 5100s set on the 3rd setting. Highest setting was too much unless you want some lean front to back. I just wanted to level the truck out and maybe get slightly bigger tires. It rides fine, maybe a little stiffer, but definitely better feel driving from stock. I used the stock coils with them. No problems so far.

Just do a little prep work and save a ton of money. Those pre-made meals are great but so expensive.

For the price of a few mountain houses you can buy a basic vacuum sealer and make your own mountain houses too.

Thank you, I was thinking of doing the same thing. Really like the looks for your truck. My is the same, no lift, in white. So 5100's should do me just fine.

No problem, super white is really my favorite color for tacomas. I had a 2001 white Tacoma for 11 years and loved it. Bought this black one on Memorial Day. Never had a black truck before. Looks good when it's clean, keyword WHEN. I have never seen a white xsp-x. I'm sure it looks sharp. I love everything about the xsp-x except the hood scoop. Wish they would have done the same scoop that are on the TRD sports instead of the stick on. Have you done anything else to your truck?
