Ok I was having problems with my trailer light plug. So I was looking under the truck at the plug. The rear part of the frame looks like I can put my finger through it. It looks awful. At what point is the frame good for buy back from Toyota? Or is it to late for that? The frame has been checked and the extra under coating was added when it was my dads. Or does the middle of the frame have to be bad? Mine only looks bad form around the read of the leave springs back.

Call Toyota. The recall is 15 years from original date of purchase. It should qualify to my knowledge.

I think if you can poke holes through any part of the frame or there is enough structural damage, it will be replaced doesn't matter where it is

It has been checked and the under coating added when my dad had it. Then when he past away I was having a recall done and they checked it again about to years ago. I just didn't know if the rear would be enough to do it or not. I really don't want to lose the truck for sentimental value, But it will go to my daughter in the next few years so it has to be safe.

Call Toyota HQ and have them start a case file for you. They should call you back within a day or so (weekend) and start the process for you.

There is no buy back for these trucks anymore. Get that frame swapped out and pass it along to the daughter sounds like a great idea!

Doesn't matter where the frame damage is, if there is a hole in the rear I wouldn't be surprised if there were other you can't see or haven't noticed.

Technically this is not a recall. This falls under the frame corrosion service campaign for cold weather states, under which the warranty for the frame is extended to 15 years from the "in service date" for model years '01-'04, provided corrosion preventative treatment (undercoating) was applied by Toyota before the deadline. Sounds like in your case it was. There are far too many cases where this was not done, and Toyota is standing firm on the warranty requirements.

If your dealer has experience with frame replacements you can work directly with them, otherwise call Toyota corporate HQ to establish your case. Your dealer is still going to have to do an inspection and document it for corporate HQ. They will look for perforations or weakness in 12 areas, including behind the rear axle.

They can go fast. My '01 frame failed inspection in less than a year from when it passed inspection. It rusted through at the rear axle leaf spring mount, and they would not let me drive it off the lot. They gave me a loaner truck to use until my frame was replaced.

Called local dealer a few minutes ago. An was told the frame program ended in March of this year. She never ask the year of the truck or anything. I did tell her my name I guess she could have pulled up my history that way.

Call corporate. You have an '02, and if undercoated, should be covered to 2017 depending on your in service date. It is possible your '02 was manufactured early, but not that early. That just don't seem right. Call HQ and open a case today.

For as serious and expensive as this issue is, you'd think Toyota would make sure their dealers had a clue about the service campaign. Like said if it has been 15 years or less since the original purchase date of your Tacoma you are good for a new frame since your frame was inspected prior to 2012 and it'll obviously fail their frame inspection now

I'm having the same issue. I'm from North Carolina but I recently just purchased a '01 Tacome DoubleCab 4wd and three months from having it my O2 sensors went out so I had my shop replace them and they came running in the waiting room telling me I'm driving a death trap. I called headquarters like everyone said and they told me because the previous owner didn't take the truck in 2012 to get looked at on the frame and get the undercoating that was required. Therefore because of him/her I got shot out of getting a new frame. The truck is originally from New York. Here are some photos.

Hope you can get that new frame. Wish I could.

Yeah coated by a freaking used car dealer not Toyota, because if it was coated by Toyota I would have gotten a new frame.
