Ive had my 2002 Tacoma since new. Now has 220,000 miles.
Starts and runs fine. Its never had a valve adjustment because mechanic at dealer said dont worry about valve adjustment for a long time and thats when I had around 100,000 miles.
Do you think I should get valves adjusted or dont worry as long as it starts and runs fine ?
    Thanks

My engine had 480,000 before head gasket went out and never did a valve adjustment.

    Wow !!!
Was it the same shim style valve adjustment configuration like I have ?
I plan on keeping the truck for another 5 to 10 years or longer if possible and dont want to do any long term damage.
    Thanks

I've heard that around 200k we need valve adjustments and I've heard that because a neighbor of mine has a double can he had gotten 280k out of the first motor then rebuilt it and said it never ran right or somthing so he threw a new motor in it from Toyota, I got 142k on my engine I plan on getting them checked by Toyota by 160k just to be safe... I'm not 100% sure I want to keep the truck still.....

They probably should be adjusted if they are Making noise or very noisy, but I never had
    any issues

The problem isn't that they get noisy they usually start to get tight. More common if u run it hard a lot. I believe every 130k miles is the suggested valve clearence check. I've done mine twice had it done at 120 and I recently did it at 190 just to be safe. I Feel like it's a tune up item. It seems to idle smother after wards. And there's never more than a few shims slightly out of spec mostly exhaust. I've always felt that valves should be serviced more than most do quads and 22re need it all the time. Along with brake fluid. Change ur brake fluid people. Or go buy a ridge line and forget about it.

Thanks I probably should to be safe I guess.
Would you trust the adjustment to a reputable mechanic just as much as the Toyota dealer ?

    K thx.
We live out in the sticks.
The closest dealer is almost an hour away.
Ive read that if they (local mechanic) needed shims for adjustment then its not a regular stock item of course because of the variety of different thicknesses so I would have to wait on availability.
I think it might be worth it.

Just get the valve clearances checked. You probably don't need them adjusted. There is an allowable range like 0.25-0.35mm for exhaust, and you can't get an exact clearance (like exactly 0.30mm) anyway since the shims only come in 0.05mm increments. Most likely all your valves are within range at 220k.

The main problem is if the exhaust valve clearances are too tight the valves will get too hot and you risk getting a burnt valve which requires the head be taken off to fix. If the clearances are at the higher allowable range or slightly out of range (too big) you will just get slightly less performance.

These shims are made of very hard metal and don't wear down or need adjustment for a long time. The clearances change because the valves wear very slowly over time. Usually the clearances will get bigger over time.

I checked and adjusted the valve clearances on my 2003 2RZ-FE at 110k since the previous owner never had it done.
The manual says the valves clearances should be checked every 60k.
One cylinder needed two new intake shims and another needed two new exhaust shims. The reshimmed valves were just over the tight end of the specification limit. All other valve clearances were right in the middle of the range.

If you need shims, you can order them from the dealer.

While your mechanic is in there....
    New valve cover gasket.
    New PCV valve.
Clean throttle body from both sides.
    Remove and clean IAC valve.
What the hell- clean the MAF too.
Make sure low torque is used on the valve cover bolts: inch pounds not foot pounds!!!

    OME and worth every penny.
they usually get tight from hammering into the hot seats 1000's of times every ride.
mine were fine @ 170K miles, sport bikes I've had needed adjustments every 15K.
