Not saying that 87 is bad or anything... But from a Performance stand point, if Toyota's owners manual states they are using 91 to do their research, wouldn't it be impossible to attain the numbers from Toyota's dyno using 87?

It is kinda interesting that you see a lot more fine print disclaimers on vehicle commercials that say stated horsepower using 93 octane fuel.

I can understand that.. More forced induction than ever before in the market.

It has been said before, but non-ethanol gas is better for your engine.

Especially small engines that tend to sit between uses. The ethanol can build a varnish in the bowl and floats, gumming up the carb.

We don't have that problem in a car, but I notice a significant difference in how the engine feels.

If you're looking for ethanol free gas stations located near you, check the website below.

That's not what it says. Says they used RON 91 octane (research octane number).RON is the worldwide standard. (MON+RON)/2 is the standard in the US. 87 (MON+RON)/2 is equal to RON 91.

    .
I had a slight "ping" when it was hot and humid and I switched from 87 to 92 and it stopped.

Other than that, I can't tell any difference.

Got good advice from splitbolt on my problem and it worked.

Ford tends shoots low on their performance numbers. I know that was the case with the 3.5L engine in their SHO

Ethanol...a 'gift' from special interest groups and crooked politicians.

Good to know. I just saw research octane of 91 which would assume 91 is octane in the us.

I've got a couple cans of 110 octane race fuel left over from the weekend. Maybe I should try it in the tacoma.

    Its in my manual
    2015 V6 DCLB TRD Sport
it says on 87 youll get the standard ratings 236 hp, 266 torque
it says 91 will give you 250 hp, not sure about the torque figure

Sorry to bring this back to life, but I would like to add my own input and thought it would be more appropriate not to start a whole new thread.
I’m running overland tune currently, but I’ve tried this with both the OTT, OV, and Stock tunes. The truck definitely runs much smoother with higher octane fuels. No, it doesn’t provide any more power, but it really smooths out the torque curve. I’ve had issues with the truck being “squirrely” and erratic with its torque response on all tunes and what I’ve determined to be the issue is aggressive timing changes by the ECU (presumably to avoid knock). You can blame this on me for getting my foot into the pedal to deep too low in the rpm band but 1.) this is a very knock prone engine and 2.) due to the ECU “doing its thing” behind the scene, there’s really no direct indication that you’re too far into the throttle (in older cars you’d call this “lugging” the motor and you’d get definitive feedback in terms of sound and feel, not so with the Tacoma). Anyway, as the rpm’s climb and the LSPI becomes less of an issue, the ECU advances timing and makes other corresponding changes behind the scenes but damnit not very smoothly. I almost always run 87 octane and just deal with it, but occasionally I’ll splurge for 93 and it really does make a difference.
If you’re happy running the motor at higher rpm’s or you aren’t a heavy-footed clumsy driver like me, or you’re just happy the way your particular truck runs with 87 (some motors have individual quirks and can be more/less knock prone than others), then it’s probably not worth your money.

After my KDMAX tuning, I started running 91O to get the most out of the sport setting it was tuned to. I personally have noticed a slight bump in mpg (I don’t go around roasting tires) with my setup. That being said, mine is a DD and still on All-Season Firestone Destinations and am roughly 22mpg on the freeway, and 18/19mpg around town.

I also figured since I was used to paying $5.40 for 87O in Vegas circa early 2022, might as well spend the $4.25 on 91O at this point.

    My two cents

i use 87 octane with 10% ethanol and average 22ish MPG, and change the engine oil and filter at 5K miles.....wait for it....because that is what toyota recommends.
