I remember talking to a long time Local Fly Fisher who said you will know when you get to the heavy metal section where no insects or trout are found. But nothing more specific on that. You see it down in Alpine Loop as well by Animas Forks.

Hi folks. I'm a complete rookie in a bone stock sport. Looks like Jones Pass should be easy enough to get my feet wet as far as exploring. Anything I should know before I head out there? I'm thinking of taking the wife and kiddo out there tomorrow AM.

Any pics? Not sure I've ever caught a splake..This was a trip of a lifetime. My buddy and I probably caught 100 fish like this. It was cast after cast for a while..These brook trout were chasing each other trying to get the fly out of the hooked ones mouth. I saw two fish beach themselves chasing the hooked ones we were netting. We had doubles for about two hours..I have a cut on my stripping finger.

Awesome! No pics, but they look just like lake trout but with a forked tail instead of flat and orange find on a few, they are a laker/brook hybrid. All on steamers, tossed out as far as you could get it, sink to the bottom and strip back. Caught a really nice brookie too, super vibrant colors like the one you posted. Sad high days are coming to an end (fishing that is) ;)

I'm going to try and hit one more spot next weekend and dream of this place until next year. These fish were so aggressive you could miss the set then slap it back in the water and they'd still take it. I have a video of my buddy catching 3 in 3 mins and one of them he did that exact thing too..it was easily the most no brainer day I've ever had. But we had to work for it. Bluebird skies all day and hiked out 3 miles above treeline by moonlight.

    No. It makes things inaccessible.

Most of the high country trails don't open up until July or so.
