I have 16000 miles on my Trdor. I have to admit it took me a while to get used to driving it. I have read on here a lot about low end torque and the wimpy 3.5 L motor. I have seen where some people state that getting on to highway from and on ramp scares them because they are afraid of getting rear ended from the lack of acceleration in their truck. I am just the opposite if I pushed my gas petal hard I am closer to be afraid I might rear end someone. My experience if you push down on the gas pedal it has plenty of get up and go. I checked my truck from a dead stop and floored the gas pedal and it went redline very quickly and I was off like a scaulded dog. If you use your gas pedal and no response then maybe you need to take it to the dealership. My truck will accelerate slow if I let it but I don't let it by giving it some gas. That;s my opinion and i am sticking to it.

I also don't find this truck sluggish at all, especially past 3.5K RPM and it is eager to downshift

It pulls pretty hard in the upper RPMs, which I find kind of strange for a truck, but whatever, all good.

I think it's pretty funny that people think this truck has no low end torque compared to the 2nd gen considering peak torque comes only 600 rpms later than the old one. Peak hp is 1k higher but 42 more hp is a lot.

I think a lot of it is older guys. Guys used to old big blocks and V8's. Sure a lot of newer motors have more hp or torque numbers but the operate a lot differently. They are more efficient and in order to do so they are designed differently. Most are high compression with variable value timing. The power band on them is higher. Take that and add newer computer controlled transmissions and electronic throttle and there is going to seem like there is lag, or no power at low RPM, ect. Hell even my 3.5 ecoboost twin turbo takes a second or two before the turbos spool and it kicks in but once it does it moves. The motor itself doesn't have much power, probably similar to Toyotas 3.5 if not less. There are a few times where I have experienced severe turbo lag and the motor alone feels empty. Reminds me of the 3.7 I had in my old Jeep Liberty. The damn thing would always rev high when I stepped on it and would take 2-3 seconds before it moved. I hated that vehicle. But instead of bitching about it I just ended up getting rid of it. Not only did it have problems (heads replaced under warranty) but I hated how it seemed like it never had any power. Finally said enough was enough. Ended up getting a frontier after that. I liked the motor a lot better in that. But again 2 different vehicles and motors. Not everyone is going to like Toyotas new 3.5. Everything these days is aimed towards fuel economy. Another thing to remember with the 3.5 is the Otto to Atkins cycle the computer needs to control that as well. I'm sure there is lag when it retards the timing and changes the injection. I'm still clueless on how people can take these for test drives and say yes this is the vehicle I want. Then 2 weeks later say this motor sucks. This tranny sucks. This truck has no power. It's a pile of shit. News flash unless your having a major issue the motor and tranny have been that way since you first got the truck. If you aren't happy now, you shouldn't of been happy then. Some people just get too caught up in buying something new they can't control themselves

People dislike these trucks now, just wait until Toyota adds start/stop technology in them. If they do I can't wait to see the bitching that will arise with that

They should have geared 1st gear much lower like the GM twins are doing next year. At least gives you the impression you have some low-end torque.

This should be a fun motor with the manual transmission. I am transitioning from an 02 WRX to a Tacoma (both manual) and I cannot wait to get the motor broken in and enjoy the upper rpm ranges.

Don't have the truck yet but don't expect acceleration to be a problem. I'm coming from a 3VZE.

The 3.5L EcoBoost makes 420 lb-ft of torque @ 2500 rpm. If yours has turbo lag and/or feels light on power, as you described, you might want to have it looked at.

This reminds me of the airliner that crashed in the Potomac River because the pilots didn't use enough thrust on takeoff due to an iced over engine sensor telling them the engines were producing more power than they were (they were from Florida and didn't turn on the heater). All they had to do was open the throttles all the way, but they didn't because they were required to make de-rated takeoffs to save money.

Dude, actually read all that he posted. He is saying he likes the power but sometimes the turbo lag makes engine feel gutless until the turbo actually spools up.

i have chimed in on a few of these threads and from my point i am comparing it to my 2008 TRD 4.0. the difference is obvious when comparing and how can i not compare, that is the truck i traded in for my 2016. if one did not come from a 2nd gen to the 3rd gen then i can see how everything is fine and dandy. i could go on and on here but that sums it up.......

It is quite enjoyable to drive the M/T V6, once you get used to it's "quirks". Don't expect quick sports car like bang shifting though, the truck will get grumpy at you! For one, the driveshaft/u-joints will sound like they're gonna drop if your footwork is not pretty much perfect. Not complaining, but I've seen a few other members ask questions about "clanking", especially when doing a short 1-2 upshift. My 0.02

The ecoboost sucks johnson. I'd rather drive a moped.

There is almost no turbo lag with the 3.5L EcoBoost. Ford used two small turbos to minimize turbo lag, hence the 420 lb-ft of torque @ 2500 rpm. I owned a 2013 SHO and I'm very familiar with that engine.
