    Good info...

Most I've ever been able to put in my truck is 17.4 gallons and the light had been on for at least 15 miles.

My 2010 light came on and I drove 45 miles more, using a shade more than 2 gallons of fuel. I put about 19.5 gallons in at that fillup.

according to my calculations, mine comes on at ~4 gallons remaining. but yea I routinely go 30-40 miles (sometimes more) after the light comes on.

It is set to hit at 4 gallons but I try not to let it get that far. The one time I did the 45 or so was out of necessity.

No idea what light you're talking about. I fill up when the needle points straight up.

Don't we have a 21 gal tank? I've gone 55 miles after light and put in 19.7gal of fuel.

I don't understand why so many always want to push it to empty.
So hard on the fuel pump and engine if you do actually run dry.

Light comes on, fill up. Why push your luck and hurt the truck?
If you are in an unknown area and not sure about what could be coming up for fuel stations, hit 1/4 tank and go fill up at the next station.

If you want to ruin your $40K investment...by all means push it on every tank till you run dry.

are there any studies on this? (this is an actual serious question) my last truck had 170K+ on the fuel pump and never saw a problem. I drove her the same way that I do this one.

I persoanlly think it takes a special kind of idiot to run out of gas. I mean, really... It's not like we're driving '61 Beetles without fuel gauges these days. And if your gauge is broken, watch the miles and fill up before you get remotely close to empty. Lesser minds probably ought not to be on the highways anyway... lol

That said, I've never gone more than about 10 miles after my light came on and I think the most I've ever put in was about 17.5 gallons.

How horribly laid out is that chart? It's not ordered by anything at all. It's like someone just sh*t all that out and it landed wherever on the page.

We do, or 21.1 but I believe 21 off my skull.

Very much, especially with an older vehicle. I learned that with my Olds Delta 88 in college, though I learned then the gauge wasn't working right. Fortunately it was a mechanical pump so much cheaper.

My friend was almost out of fuel a few yrs ago and I explained it to him this way..try it if you want, but you risk losing the pump if it runs dry..plus you have an older vehicle. If you have $600 or so laying around by all means try it though, if you don't wait for me to bring you 2 gallons of fuel.

Haven't got mine yet, but don't these new trucks with all that electronics in it, tell you about how many miles you left of the current amount of fuel in your truck?
