I remember the first time someone (who wasn't an 'official') called me sir on a hiking trail. I was like, ouch. And that was ten-ish years ago... Aero is right, it only gets worse. :pout: :sadviolin:

I find myself calling other people sir that i don't know. Not because they are older but because they appear to be respectable male adults. Maybe it was me.

Insulate the bolt from ground and run a hot wire from the battery to it. When they go to unscrew it, it'll let them know in a kind and tender way to back the f*** off.

The best theft deterrent isn't a specific nut or bolt, it's doing things like parking in well lit, highly visible areas etc. If you're really worried about it you can probably find security torx bolts (normal torx except a with a "post" in the middle similar to the link Steve posted) locally at a hardware store. Nothing is 100% theft proof though. Plenty of people out there have the means to remove those security bolts too.

There's a company called iFixit that sells tools for computer repair. Radio Shack now carries their basic tool kit. It comes with a selection of torx and flat security bits. You don't even need to know someone or have access to special tool shops anymore.

Nope, not at all. I have the bits myself and I have never worked a job which required them. I just picked them up along the way. That was my point, even the "security" bolts don't provide much security. You're better off just being smart about where you park/leave your truck.

Yeah, it's really about making it more then a quick grab. But if they are prepared, etc they are going to get it.

Guess no one has told Spicy about the tailgate theft. :redxfall:

As an aside should one ever need to disassemble a phone...or just need any crazy small tool bits that iFixit kit is super helpful. I actually need it for work but it has uses around the home too. Just my .02

Okay I am going to attempt to install by ditch lights or at least brackets. If you see posts from me that means I screwed up something. If you don't hear anything back- that means everything went according to plan

There is that, though it's that whole 'adult' thing... For me it was that kind of clear sign that oh, you can't be mistaken for a college student any more - because who addresses an apparent college student as sir unless you're retail or an official of some kind. It's also this informal vs pronoun use. Like on a trail I don't usually use pronouns at all if addressing someone, even to get their attention, but if the situation calls to be more formal I add it in there (excuse me vs excuse me sir). And then I also tack it on even with familiars (thank you sir or yes sir?). Guess it comes down to tone and context. Some 'sir's make you feel old or in trouble, and some just seem like normal conversation. :)

Has anyone put a little bit of solder on a screw to deter stolen lights? What is the Loctite bond- is that easy to work around if I replace to rigids down the road?

Just use JB weld :anonymous: Better make sure your lights are exactly where you want them before doing that though...

Just bring it by my house and I will install them for you, I don't want you to stab yourself on accident or something.

Good advice from others. Little is theft-proof. Even those above nuts probably could be bitten into by some vice grips. If it's an option, a tack weld holds onto a nut/bolt head pretty well. Many years ago, winch thefts were up (even happening in the parking areas of offroad events). The quick fix was to tack weld the hardware.

:anonymous: Dont do to many in one sitting as you start feeling a little funny after a while. :rasta:

I have started doing a lot of cone nuts and putting a tube sleeve arounf the holes so they cant get vice grips to and then they also need the nut to get even close to grabbing them. But then again i carry an angle grinder and a sawsall with me most of the time so..... :p
