It actually is in most ways. I think they could have done better though.

If my 1st gen still runs for another 20 years I'll wait til 2030 give Toyota enough time to improve and correct their mistakes

I love my 16. Only issue I had was the chirping fuel pump that was changed out. Haven't had a problem sense. I drove my Tacoma across the world, literally. I've taken my truck from cement of South Florida, through death valley off roading, across the Yukon and now I take it off road weekly in Kodiak Alaska. I have pictures to prove it on the "Where have you taken your third gen" thread. I have 0 Issues. I love this truck! Stop hating and enjoy it. This is a forum, I understand that more people are here to complain, that is why most people seek forums because either one; they want to do research on a product (myself), some go to find out what is wrong with their vehicle and how to fix it, (most of the people that join). If you don't like the truck, eat the couple grand and get something else. Enough said.

Motor is not new and frame is not new. Tranny may be new but seems solid.

Not sure what kinks need to be ironed out. Sure there is always room for improvement but toyota kept it safe by using trickled down tech

OP... What model year of any vehicle created was perfect or had no "bugs"? If you don't like the '16 then trade it or sell it if you can. If vehicles from yesteryear are really perfect then go buy one and make it your own.

I've met several people who restore old vehicles knowing it drives like a shopping cart, or is sluggish. They chalk it up to the vehicles character, but they still love the car.

Drive your truck, accept it for what it is. If it doesn't meet your expectations then move on.

Hi. I know the 3.5 engine block is not new. However, was the Lexus 3.5 a direct injection motor?
As for the transmission, there are many people having the below issue:

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GHnPdDMhRSs

And there is also the rear axle component failures.

    These are major bugs.

Some have direct injection and some don't some use both. I think all the newer ones have direct injection and Atkins cycle I believe. Same exact motor as the Tacoma. That block has been around since 02 so back then the technology just wasn't there

    Replacing my 2012 taco with a 2017.
Not worried with the bugs and problems, after all the problems I had with the 2012 I decided to move to Ram.

    For historical correctness:

I borrowed this from 3dBdown post on another thread, I cant take credit for these statistics:

Except the stats just don't show that to be solid reasoning. Two sources --problems per 100 cars. Same basic results with a couple of years being slightly different. 1st year of 1st gen is among the most reliable as is the 1st year of 2nd gen--definitely way better than some later years. 3rd gen --too soon to tell

You would need to wait ~8 years to get a "more" reliable 2nd gen than 1st year.

1st gens are a wash. Pretty dang reliable all around, but later years did trend toward slightly more problems than early years.

Easily worth the risk getting a 1st year though--based on historical statistics/facts. No real reason to wait.
