I have a 2014 2.7L 4x4 access cab. Question is, why do I only see threads talking about shifting out of "D" into 4? My only option is to shift from D to 3, which has the engine screaming past about 55 mph. Is my truck considered a five speed auto or a four speed with overdrive? I'm very confused as to why I cannot simply shift out of overdrive into fourth??? Or is there something else I'm missing? Is overdrive also "4" , do I have a magical transmission that has only four gears yet shifts distinctly between five speeds ???!! This has been pissing me off since I bought the damn thing. Any input is appreciated.

yours is a 4 speed transmission. the 4 bangers in the 2nd gen have the same transmission as the 1st gen v6's and 3rd gen 4 runner v6's as well as the 1st gen taco 4 bangers autos. Its a good trans

4th gear is overdrive aka, beyond 1:1

Ok, i figured fourth was my OD, what I want to know now, is why there is a distinct drop in rpm a few seconds AFTER the tranny had shifted into 4 or OD? That's what's got me pulling my hair? Of course the reverse is also true, start up a hill in OD and the tranny will slip into a lower gear, but it is not third... I know because I can manually shift into third and the truck will downshift. For that matter, I cruise in third rather often anyhow so I'm pretty familiar with it. Is there some kind of "slip" built into fourth gear ?, say when a certain level of torque is achieved?

You might be sensing the difference when the torque converter locks up.

Ahhhh, thank you my friend, I did not know of a locking mechanism, but that makes sense, especially considering the response I get in 4 is better than 1st!

Correct. the drop after it shifts into 4th is the torque converter locking up.

From my days of driving a first gen taco with the same trans as yours. It will only lockup in 3rd if you take it out of OD (4th). The first gens had an OD off button on the side of the shifter that essentially does the same as it would in your truck if you moved it from D to 3rd. I am not sure if the programming on the trans is the same between first n 2nd gen, but again to get the torque converter to lockup in 3rd gear you had to select 3rd gear. It was NOT like the 5spd auto in the 2nd gen v6's that will lockup the torque converter in the last two gears (4th and 5th) regardless of gear selection

In some ways you have the better transmission.

It's easy to service with fluid changes.

It has a dipstick that the 'big boys' don't. I feel sorry for them.

I have v6 5 speed auto and I feel that when the tranny shifts to the 5th gear it feels different then the other gears. I asked the dealer about it and they told me about the torque converter locking mechanism. I thought they were BSing.
Good to hear that. Thanks guys

I've been (slightly) wondering this for a while but I've always been pretty sure my A340E is working fine. It does the same thing that's shown in the video, which is 5 rpm changes through all the gears:
    1st to 2nd
    2nd to 3rd
    3rd lockup
    3rd to 4th
    4th lockup

Because of the drastic RPM change during 4th lockup, I wondered if it was actually a 5-speed but no.

If you've driven almost any automatic vehicle since 1980, and certainly since 1990, its a 99% bet it had a lockup converter.

25 - 35 years worth. Probably the only thing a high % of this forum has ever driven.

I also have a Lexus GX470 (over 100k) the transmission looks similar to the Tacoma (35k) but it definitely shifts way smoother, and never felt any difference in shitfting between gears as in the taco.
Going into the 5th gear in the Tacoma, depending on the rpm sometimes it feels like it is jerking.
