If anything, if you want to go that route, use a Tile. https://www.thetileapp.com/

Inexpensive, small and easily hideable, and the batteries last for a year (well, they recommend you replace them after a year). Could even hide it under the carpet somewhere. Then you can track it with your phone. If something gets stolen you can mark it as such and anyone else near it with the app it will update it's location. Heck, I keep one on a few things and it gets anonymously updated to it's last whereabouts even though it's not marked stolen.

I haven't visited the off topic section in years, but I got completely caught up in this thread, it's crazy. OP, sorry about the truck, and the shit the poor thing had been through. I wonder how the thieves were starting the truck so many times without keys or damaged ignition. It looks like they thoroughly beat the shit out of it too. Did you say the police have video of the thieves taking the truck? Are they going to do any fingerprinting or anything?

    Huge day for me today!!!!!!!!!

Investigation complete and big surprise, they found out that my truck was stolen by thieves... What a waste of almost one month. The claims guy said that the investigation was longer than it should have been and thought the investigator was a little crazy. Funny they grill you and get all in your business when they need info, but I got news of my investigation ending via email saying they were gunna pay my claim. So much for telling me anything. Oh well u don't care enough to call and ask what happened.

Anyways USAA tried to buy me off this morning. Email said they were gunna deposit funds to my account... No negotiation, no asking what I wanted to do, thought maybe a $9500 check would make me be quite and close the claim. NOPE, called them up and had a long conversation about expectations. They are currently towing the truck to one of their repair facilities I choose and the shop is going to do their own appraisal of the truck to see what they think. From there USAA will either authorize the repairs with my permission or total the truck. We will see in the next couple days. Ultimately USAA is doing the repairs and footing th complete bill. Took them 33 days from the theft to actually take some action, but things are finally moving.

I agree, too many people don't appreciate the bond between a patriotic american and his truck. They probably drive priuses.

Bummer I just got my 2017 and was looking at steering wheel locks etc etc. I live in AZ and a lot of cars get jacked and taken right down to Mexico. I thought with the chipped keys it was harder to steal but obviously they still got yours...sorry man.

Just spoke to the repair shop today, looks like it is going to be a repair, not a salvage. Damage right at $12k as we speak. They did the mechanical inspection and everything checked good, got a full drive train service on top of the inspection. Now onto body work!

Now that it's a repair I am struggling with the "should I keep it" question. I really love this truck and I might just have to hold onto it.

It took USAA a long time to come around but they are finally taking care of business. They will still get fired after this is all taken care of but at least they are getting it done now. Sad for them, I was always a big advocate for them and they as losing a lot of money by losing my business...

Hard as it is, keep an open mind. Drive it for a few weeks first. Did the same with my 06 Chevy Colorado, but that was an engine failure

    Logic says sell it....

    Emotions say keep it....

Financially its probably better to keep because I will not get KBB value for the truck with the theft and damage on the carfax. Selling it for $4K less, for example, would put in the position to buy someones higher millage truck that costs less because I don't want to take on any more debt. I am leaving active duty military in 7 months and the last thing I need is a big car payment to pay when I get out... Might have to sit on it for a year or so then sell depending on what happens. Financially of course...

So definitely give it a few weeks.

My gut said keep my truck, I had just paid it off. My head said cut the losses.

Sorry you have had to go through all of this.

If your options are to keep it or sell for a higher mileage one due to cost, I would say the logical choice is KEEP IT. I completely understand that, emotionally, the truck "will never be the same again", but it's still a better gamble than starting over with someone else's high mileage rig. Just my 2¢.

I know I asked you this before but since your insurance company did their investigation, how was your truck actually stolen?
