I haven't looked lately but the cover has padding underneath. It's most likely for just noise reduction.

Now I have to wonder. Do they spin them up on the assembly line and check them with a decibel meter? If they are over the limit they slap one of those $30+ covers on them? ;)

Its for noise reduction and splash protection. Toyota knows they have issues with moisture in these systems. Hence the addition of the shutdown purge on the 2013+ v6's

Every 12+ v6 i have seen has a cover on it.

Doubt they go through all that. Though the truck that I've seen with a cover was from Baja, CA plant and the one from Texas did not have it. Both 2015.

There goes my theory. Pre-Runner or 4x4?

This one looks more like the one on my '14 V6 for half the price. It does say FJ V6 though.

My attempt at humor with the meter line.. does have me wondering though what criteria they use to determine which trucks get them and which don't. It doesn't seem like a critical part to me so I would think you are fine without one. Certainly let not worth $30 some dollars to add one.
What holds them on? Are they a pressure fit or do they use the center screw?

Ok then. Pre-runner had the cover and the 4x4 did not. Maybe that's what it is or maybe it just all depends if they felt like putting a cover on one at the time.

Wouldn't surprise me if that was listed as an option on the window sticker.

I thought all 13' up had the cover, my father has a 13' base 2wd and it has the cover, and my aunt has a 14' trd sport and also has the cover. My 12' offroad has no cover. I'm with the otherrs that it may have been introduced to reduce noise, although it seems just as loud as mine w/of the cover.

Apparently if they run out of them on the assembly line they just don't bother with it. I can't see they make a difference if they are present or not.

It was on the truck when I got it not long ago. Looks good, but I don't see how it makes the fan any quieter at all, thin solid plastic, maybe a splash shield.
