Another dealership will sell you a truck at the price you want.
    Trust me....
A vehicle sitting on the lot needs to MOVE to make space for another vehicle.
It's the end of the year and they need to clear the lot for more inventory. That's period!
    And that's YOUR Angle...

Don't give the salesman $1000.00 to write up a sale in paperwork
Give him a couple hundred, and you made out fair.

Another option with a budget of $25k is that you could get a new DCSB SR5 4cyl Auto (7185). I'm in the slight minority but I think the 4cyl has plenty of power depending on your needs/use. It also has less issues reported as far as I know, but that could be because there are less 3rd gen 4cyl drivers.

With the way Tacomas hold their value I found it worth it to get a new one versus paying the same price or just a grand or so cheaper for used.

I came from an '11 TDI sportwagen and I'm driving an '11 reg cab 2.7 5M/T with 68k I bought for $12k and I'm loving it. We also bought an '05 Subaru Outback with 75k miles on it, since our TDI was our only car between myself and my girlfriend. I put 45k on my TDI from November to June and drove it from NY to Cali to Colorado to NY and I intend on driving my Reg cab to Colorado this winter. Do I miss Diesel Torque? Absolutely! But I love this truck, and I've driven it for a few thousand miles and haven't had a check engine light! Hah.

I'll probably throw a CarPlay radio head in it, and while my bench seat isn't quite as comfortable as my Sportwagen its not bad at all for me. While I've lost that intelligent cruise control, power windows etc etc, I've gained a vehicle that takes me places I couldn't go in my VW that I can maintain myself. In my VW I would use cruise control to go 35 down main st... Now I dont even have it and it doesn't phase me in the slightest, but now I dont have to walk 3 miles down the access road to the trail head my VW didn't have the clearance drive. It's all about your priorities. The VW was a purchase for MPG and long distance driving but I lost so much versatility from my previous vehicle as far as the things I enjoy doing I'm happy to lose amenities to gain back the utility of a truck.

Just echoing some thoughts here- you are negotiating with a dealer not Toyota. They may or may not be flexible on their vehicle depending on how well their sales are going that month, what kind of $$ they gave on trade for that vehicle, how popular that vehicle is...etc.

The Tacoma is the most popular vehicle in this market segment- if you don't like the deal wait a couple of days, more options will appear. Check with another lot. Private party and pay to have a mechanic look it over, that is worth more than a 90 day warranty. Have fun with it, time is on your side.

I just purchased a used Tacoma from the Cavender dealership yesterday. They had a 2015 TRD off-road for sale. I purchased through my insurances car buying program so I did save money and I'm very happy with the price I paid but to answer your question, yes they will negotiate but not much.

Such great advice, all! Thanks for your help.

I pulled the trigger on a 2010 SR5 with the V6. I was able to talk the dealership down - I feel good about the deal. The mileage made me nervous (135,000), but the truck is in immaculate shape, had 1 owner and all maintenance records attached. I also know nothing was towed (no hitch), so that was a plus too.

The few downsides I hope I can fix (advice is welcome)
    • Center compartment latch is broken (annoying)- the button is missing and the top is always sprung up. I can't find the part online. I see a junkyard in my future.
    • I started noticing a cigarette smell shortly after I got the truck home. The dealership did a great job masking it while I was there! I've already cleaned off every surface with vinegar and I now have baking soda covering all cloth material. I hope this does the trick.
    • I believe the alternator is noisy. I can hear a faint whine from the engine compartment, higher pitched at higher speeds. I'm visiting my mechanic first thing next week to do a general checkup and look into this. I hope this can be fixed and isn't anything too expensive. :fingerscrossed:

Congrats! Seems to me like most issues that crop up with these trucks are pretty minor. The 4.0 is a tried and true motor, with tons of support. She'll serve you well. And as for the dealer thing... If you're happy with the price you paid, then nothing else really matters. ✌

Na, not a big picture guy. It's the truck in my avatar. I like the color. Seems to hide dirt really well. I'm saving up for a URD supercharger stage 1.

Jesus Christ these things stay in value...I paid $30.5k for my TRD sport DCLB 4x4 new. i just drove by two dealerships with 4 used tacomas, all with about 40-50k miles. They still wanted $29.5k for those. I just can't understand why you wouldn't just buy a new one for 3-4K more when you're already spending that much $$$

I personally don't like the way the new ones look, and the new ones don't offer anything I want/need unless they come with car play. Then there's the whole school of thought on not buying the first generation of a new truck. We all know the older ones are very reliable. So saving 4k and getting a truck in a style I prefer that will become less and less desirable as mileage goes up means I may spring for the used. Then again I just bought a reg cab '11 with 68k so Im probably in the minority.
