Don't know how I missed this thread! I'm in Portsmouth NH but close enough. I'll definitely be reading this whole thread for some good ideas of places to explore. Here's a quick pic of the truck...(this was taken on the July 4th in Scarbrough)image.jpg

Ok Mainers, there are lots of threads all over about this but I want locals opinion on this. I have never done anything extra to protect my frame, but this will be my second new truck and the last one was do to the by back and frankly I didn't think about it as I was so blown away that I got a brand new truck with a used car payment.

So do nothing the company treats them well enough, get it undercoated, have it sprayed every year with that fluid stuff or some sort of oil type product. I see keeping this truck for a while, had this one for 8 years and only trading up for more cab space for the family. Motocycle want gets pushed back.

I talked to a Line-x shop and they told me about a product they offer that sounded like a combo of a clear coat and black line-x that they spray the undercarriage with (and all the little nooks and crannys). I think it was called lifetime protect or something but it was quoted about $500 but it's supposed to be for the life of the vehical, however they only really do it to brand new vehicals with no rust at all so if it sounds interesting do it right when you get your new truck.

Going on 5 years + on my 2011 with never treating the frame and very little rust. The only thing I do in winter is run it through (weekly) one of those touch less car washes that has a really good bottom blast. Of course I do clean it up well when it's dirty after returning from a camping, fishing, hunting, exploring, etc. trip.

Just my experience....others may be different.

If you plan on keeping it for a while, have it undercoated with at least something. Fluid film's great for protection but you have to have it redone every year. Ziebart does an amazing job and it's a lifetime warranty, but it's usually a $500+ expense, plus their yearly touchup which I think runs around $50. The GF had a Honda that had been Ziebarted when it was new and when she sold it at 12 years old (or 13?) the only part that had any rust was the exhaust.

HOWEVER: Ziebart's warranty is voided if you drive off road, and their definition of 'off road' includes driving down dirt roads, which kind of defeats the purpose of a truck. I was planning on having my Tacoma Ziebarted until I was scanning the warranty form and noticed that. I asked the local Ziebart dealer and they confirmed it, so I passed. I imagine that loopholes like that exist in a lot of the undercoating product's warranty language, so whatever you get, make sure you read the warranty before you buy the service!

Well, that rules them out, for me, too. I live on a dirt road. Considering going the yearly fluid film route. My buddy swears by it...

Thanks for every one's replies. I agree Zee is out the window. I have been thinking about this Nh Oil http://nhoilundercoating.com/. My concern about the Ziebart or other undercoating, is when it gets torn/chipped or what ever and water gets trapped under it. My issue with the Fluid Film or this NH oil, is its a yearly thing, after 10 years that is a few grand anyways. I hardly ever wash the truck I currently have, in fact the dealer doesn't even do it because of either racks or cap will not fit they say.

That Line X seems like it may be worth looking into, but does that void the yota warranty? With the issues I hear from some, I don't want to take chances on that.

Has anyone done the NHoil thing? I'm gonna be moving in a few years away from the snow so I don't need to worry too much about a lifetime thing and I'm just curious how well the oil coating works?

@Noelie84 , not the NH oil route, from reading a few pages 4310-4313, seems like the NH oil is less messy, as the Fluid Film seems to drip (lots)

Not the NH oil, no. There's a place right down the road from me that does Fluid Film, so I can drop it off, they can have it for the day, and it can do its dripping in their parking lot instead of in my garage, lol. Fluid Film only drips when it's first applied, really, unless they're REALLY laying it on thick. It's so viscous that you actually have to heat it up to apply it, and then once it cools back down it pretty much stays put, dripwise (but it does tend to creep). If it's a really hot day it can loosen up enough to drip, but if you apply it in the fall it's usually cool enough that it doesn't go anywhere. And then by next summer the excess has washed off.

I've applied it myself a few times, but it smells so bad and is time-consuming enough that I'm having somebody else do it this year, lol. I'm having the GF's Mustang done at the same time, so I'm going to try and wrangle a 2-car discount out of them

I just found the trains on Google maps. It's a hike to get there! Almost 5 hours from my house in Gardiner. It'd be a good weekend trip. If only I had weekends off :/

Anyone know about Pleasant Mountain over by Freyberg? Just saw a video on YouTube of some jeeps wheeling there. Perhaps a local club or something? Looks like it would be fun. Probably private property like everything else.

I hiked pleasant mountain the other week. There's a snowmobile trail that goes to the top. Maybe that is what they were on?
