Hello everyone, I recently joined to research and gather information about buying a Tacoma.

I'm set on getting a 2017 TRD OR DCSB 4X4 AT. I've been lurking over on the "How much are you paying for your 2017" thread. And from what I've seen, most people are able to get about $2000 off MSRP. However, there are a few that have said they've been able to get $500 over invoice.

A dealership told me the Tacoma I want is being built next month with an MSRP of $38,625. It only has the Premium & Technology w/out JBL and the Towing package, no accessories. I told them I wanted the truck for $35,675. I came to that number by adding up all the invoice prices for the truck + prem/tech package + towing + $940 destination fee + $500. The dealership wouldn't accept $35,675. Did I offer too low where the dealership won't play ball at all? Should I lower my expectation of trying to get $3000 off MSRP? I live in Las Vegas if that affects anything.

Thank you for your time and help.

Hopefully I can get this done and become a full fledged member.

We only have 4 Toyota dealerships here in Vegas. I emailed them all even one in Lake Havasu. None of the dealerships have the one I want on the lot. It would have to be "special ordered" they said. Good to hear you were able to get yours for invoice though. Gives me some encouragement.

Most any time you want a specific tacoma, you have to order it. I ordered mine in sept 2015 and took deliver in oct 2015.

Excuse my ignorance, but how does the ordering process work? For example, the dealership that informed me of the Tacoma I want being built, can the other 3 dealerships in my area see this information too or is it part of the allotment to that specific dealership? I hope that made sense.

I'm not 100% sure. I just told my dealer the truck I wanted, and they made it happen.

Special orders are tricky A lot of times it is about timing and luck. What I understand about the process is dealers are allocated a number of trucks based on previous sales. If you catch the dealer in the process of ordering their allocations which happen to me then you have a chance of getting exactly want you want. On the other hand, if a dealer is not getting any allocations any time soon then they will try to locate the truck you want say within a 500 to 1000 mile radius of the dealership. I would look into Costcos car buying program or like me my credit union has a car buying program with dealerships within my area. I am not sure about your market but on the east coast people are getting 3000 to 4000 off MSRP for 2017.

I ordered my fully loaded OR July 5th and got 3800 off MSRP Dealer prep and those other bullshit cost were included in the MSRP. Beware of dealers who offer discounts on MSRP and then try to add dealer prep fees and those other crap cost to MSRP You may want to try buying out of state several people on here have done that and got good deals

    Good luck

Yeah, I saw you and just a couple other guys were able to get $3000 or better off MSRP in the other thread so that's what I'm shooting for, but it just might not happen in my market. I'm not opposed to going out of state, but from what I gather, its been suggested that CA buyers come to Vegas to buy their trucks.

Looking at True Car price of what people paid in my area, it seems like the best I could do is $37,400, only ~$1200 off MSRP.

    Thanks for the insight though.

Checked the Costco Auto Program and this is what is got after searching for a Tacoma:

"Currently, we have not located a dealership in your area that has met our strict pricing criteria for the manufacturer you selected.
For your convenience, we have provided a list of comparable vehicles that are currently available with prearranged pricing at participating dealerships near you."
It then lists the Colorado, Canyon and Frontier. Boo!

The problem with reports of prices like invoice plus $500 if you don't know if they are then paying another 500 or a thousand dollars in bullshit dealer fees, or if it really is just that and taxes.

See my post in the last few days about the technique for emailing all the dealers within a reasonable drive and asking them for their lowest out the door offer. Trying to deal with dealers one at a time is going to lead to nothing but frustration for yourself.

Yup. Saw your tips. I'm trying to get them to work against each other for this Tacoma. But I needed to know if all the dealerships were able to see the same truck coming off the factory line. Apparently they can because today the 2nd dealership pulled up the same truck, same VIN, without me telling I already knew one was coming off the factory line from the 1st dealership.

As you get closer to the end of the month, they will work harder to make a sale

Yes, they can see what's in the queue. At last here in SouthEast Toyota territory I know they can.

That's because no one wants them. Lol

There's plenty of 3rd gen owners that live around your area. One of them should be able to tell you which dealer is the best to work with.

I bought my truck out of state from Auto Nation in Vegas. I went through Paulo Bautista. He gave me a good deal but then again he knew my friend...LOL!

Find a dealership with an inventory manager who has access to the factory inventory system. He can take an allocation vehicle and reconfigure it. The first place they'll check is the port, see what's scheduled to hit the port, and if any are unallocated. If there is an unallocated match, they'll snag it and flag it sold. It'll come to them and you've got your truck. Another is trading with a dealership that has that truck inbound. The third way is that when there's no match they will actually request a configuration change to a future allocation. It may affect build date because all manufacturing is based on certain part availability.

The issue lies with the manufacturing process. Toyota plans everything around timing on the line. Changes to installed configurations affects line speed, so things are planned on specific days. A DCSB SR5 takes less time down the line than my DCLB TRD Sport w/tech, so those long beds with extras are only done on specific days.

It should be relatively easy for you because you're not asking for a long bed. Your configuration is relatively common (just like building a Limited but with different seats, wheels, trim, and grille), so you shouldn't have to wait all that long.

Ask the dealerships about how often they reorder, and you'll have a good idea about what your wait time should be.

    Good luck!

My dealer didn't have the truck I wanted on their lot so the first thing they did was some kind of dealer search and found what I wanted at a dealer 25 miles away. My sales guy then grabbed one of their trucks and drove it to the other place and brought mine back. Dealer trade went smooth and all is good.

Do NOT buy a Tacoma! If you value your wallet, your relationships, your spare time... Just treat it like a hotel fire! Wrap a wet towel around your head, stay low to the ground, and gtfo!
Have over $10k in mods to mine and haven't even started yet. Wife introduces herself as a widow. Lawn is now high enough to hide a fridge. I get Xmas cards from parts vendors!
