Hard shell vs soft top

hey guys, what's everyone's opinion on the hard shell and soft top? What's better?

 

It really depends upon your needs of use for your Taco... I don't haul much of anything large. I am an avid off-roader/camper and went with a hard shell that I built a sleeping platform in the bed for that specific purpose... If you tend to haul large objects often, such as furniture, a soft topper allows you to retract it back, giving you more bed height for large/tall objects...

For my needs softtopper. It's just to keep stuff dry, to and from camping which I mostly do in the winter. Summer months I just close it up neatly against the wall in my garage and it takes up virtually no space. Hard top for security IMO. edit: added pic from last winter

 

Thanks guy, I actually want to use it for camping. So I'm better off with a soft top?

 

Different functions for both. Can camp in either. If your in bear country, hard top would be the way to go. Softtop can be opened up by a bear I'm sure.

 

Which one is better to attach a tent to?

 

You can't put a roof top tent on a soft top unless you get a rack to go around it which IMO defeats the purpose. If your camping inside it's fine. I like mine cause I just use it for storage(i use a ground tent), in the summer months I can roll up the sides and still have a shade for my dog if I ever train him to stay back there anyway. I guess if you did the rack that goes over it, it would still function for that purpose

 

And another good thing about soft top is there only about $700 new. Compared to $1200-$2000 for a hard top. I will probably end up with a hard top when I move to the mountains(bear country). That's if I don't build myself a nice bed rack that I can close off with canvas or vinyl with a RTT on top of it.
