I didn't realize corporate was open on Saturdays. I spoke with a nice woman and opened a case. The dealership didn't want to open a case so I opened one on my own. I told her how the dealership had the truck all day and changed the diff fluid and then she called them to see what the hell was going on.

They told her that the diff carrier was ordered. She came back on the line and told me what they said. I refuted their statements and she called them back.

They, on the second call, told her the carrier would be ordered on Monday and they would have it Tuesday. They told her I brought the truck in after 5pm and that's why they couldn't order the part on Friday.... She came back to me and I told her they had the damned truck all day Friday.

I told her thank you for calling them because I get a different story every time I call or talk to someone there. She said if I don't hear from them on Tuesday when 'the carrier arrives' I can call her back and she will call them. I'm tired of this dealership. It took me 3 trips just to get it test driven, when they told me every time over the phone that they could test drive it for the assigned appointment.

I'm getting close to swapping this truck out. I wonder what a "couple months away" is in real people time.

Hang in there! Try to stay as cool as a cucumber as you can--it definitely helps the whole situation in a long run.

It took me a few trips and a couple of "firm" interactions with my dealership to get the ball rolling, but now my service manager is my biggest advocate when dealing with Toyota.

This is interesting. "Back ordered" may be a way for Toyota to hold off on unnecessarily replacing diffs while the fix starts to roll out. In other words, I wonder if Toyota is telling people this part is back ordered, because they know they are coming out with a TSB in 2-3 months.

I'm just posting this to get 4 in a row.

Also, my diff is howling around 30 mph now. So that's nice.

So we called corporate again they called the dealership on a 3 way phone call. It was a bunch of he said she said he said and on and on. Then went to the dealership.

The parts manager was the senior person on duty so he helped us a lot. He showedus where he ordered the part and it would be ready to pick up in Torrance on Monday. They will be replacing the third member that afternoon and then it's going to body shop for hood and tail gate glue the next day.

They lifted the truck off the ground and drove it at 55 mph and the rear diff makes a different sound than while driving. Its like a pulsing grinding sound. That's why the tech was so worried about it. I have a video but I'll upload when I get home on wifi.

Also, they ran it on the hoist in 4 wheel drive, just to make sure it wasn't coming from the front diff, as well

Could they feel any up/down or side/side slop in the pinion flange?

No. It was tight. The tech kept the fluid to show Toyota if they want it. It was fill of metal flakes. He suggested the pinion bearing exposed to the oil may be wearing out. I assume these have 2 or more pinion bearings but idk

It doesn't fix it which would make this "back order" situation more plausible. They are basically throwing money and parts at an issue they know isn't going to be fixed by it. It's probably a liability issue or a way for them to "appease" customers (so we feel like they are at least trying to fix it).

    Yup; 2 pinion bearings.
Check out the video I posted here. Pay particular attention to when he talks about preload on the pinion bearings.

Lot of things that must be done in order and correctly...
Or, it could just be crap bearings.

I was told mine was back ordered and would take up to 2 weeks. It came in like 2 days. Something weird about the computer system. It shows back ordered, but then if it has a date next to it it really means it is in stock. I'm not 100% sure how it works, but the service manager explained it briefly and said he got confused and that is why he told me it could take so long.

    Good luck with the fix....

I talked to the parts manager today because he was the only manager on the parts / service side of the place. He was able to show me that a 'carrier' was on order and that it was in Torrance. I don't know if that's a distribution post or another service center but he said it was the only one in the area and that it had my name on it.

I can't believe Toyota didn't thouroly test these trucks for a couple of years. I love my truck but all these issues with it I'm really close to trading in for a tundra double cab with TSS off-road wheels and a trd pro grill. They said they throw in the wheels/tires and grill and they would eat the bill on them. I'll lose on $2,500 on th trade though

So you have problems with your rear end? Do you think it's going to fail?
