Hi, Many questions on the Gen1, Gen2 and Gen3 forums are more appropriate for the garage. BUT the garage is rarely use. So any of the Gen forums will get more views and likely better help. How do we increase the use of the garage?

For instance today i have a bodywork question and a rust abatement question. Neither have a good thread in the garage subcategories. Expanding the subcatagories here might help, but it is not like readers log on thinking 'man... i sure would love to read about other member's rust questions tonight, where is that sub, sub, sub catagory?'. Which explains why so few people read or post in the garage? maybe?
Turning it into one big general tacoma garage free-for-all might make more sense. It also could be placed BEFORE the gen1, gen2 and gen 3 groups on the forum pull down.
    just an idea.

I should really stop telling you what to do, your goals might be very different.....

So where do i put this body work question because it does not really have a sub category? thanks.

One problem IMHO is there isn't a real garage. One with member submitted, technically vetted, articles. Look at Miata.net for a sample of a Garage using the same software TW does.

It might grow to that if first used more.

But really i just want a place to post non-gen specific questions that has wide readership. I feel clumping might be better than splitting to encourage this given many non-gen specific questions do not fit in a subcategory of the garage..

Many folks unfamiliar with the site and the vehicles probably don't know the generation specific problems. They go straight to what applies to their truck - namely the year/gen and start their research from there.
The search function works quite well. Want to know about frame rust? Search for "frame rust". You'll get results across the entire forum. Want to know about frame rust specific to 2nd gens? Select the 2nd gen subforum when you search and only 2nd gen results will show

the problem will grow as gen 1 owners decrease in population.

The experience you describe is what inspired me to speak up. Not ideal.

Where would you like my bodywork and rust questions that are non-gen specific?

I believe it's more a gen 1 and gen 2 are united and gen 3 is on their own.

I was just saying from a population dynamics standpoint as the gen 1 cohort decreases in numbers.... because cars die... those users in gen 1 are going to have to start posting non-gen specific questions in the gen 2 group only because fewer people are in the gen 1 section, so no readership. improving the garage now would alleviate this in 5 years.

1st gens will outlive all others, your question is invalid

Great. I agree. However general automotive is in the "Off-Topic" section. Yet the question is not off topic at all. So perhaps moving general automotive to the garage makes more sense.

Perhaps adding a bodywork/repair/painting subforum makes the most sense. I don't see any of the gen subforums going away or being combined

I sure hope you are correct because i hate the gen2 and gen3 trucks. I had full cash in hand when i test drove a 2016 because i heard it would be more off roady like the gen 1's or the hilux. MAN was i sad. The gen 1 is a great truck and it is the ONLY one that I was willing to purchase (t100s, hilux and 'truck' would be ok but not common). So i did not want so say they will die. But, from a population dynamics standpoint, they will decrease in population...... unless toyota wises up and reissues them. and if they do i sure hope the 4door comes with a manual tranny.

An easy fix. and I agree. Only recommended not splitting them based on the stagnant use of the spitted garage currently. Also, when one looks at a forum like Pirate 4x4 the "general 4x4" discussion has orders of magnitude more use than the many many split discussions where people could be posting. I guess a fear that splitting the garage further will only reduce readership of those threads.

And yes, the joining of any gen forum is a bad idea.

Gen 1 trucks aren't going anywhere. These trucks refuse to die.

To be honest, I mainly click on problem-based threads (body or mechanical) to see if I can learn anything, not to post advice. Sure, occasionally something pops up that I know a little about and can chime in.

My point is, I probably would not go to a garage forum to read exclusively repair threads. I prefer how it is, where I can just go to 1st gen and see a variety of threads.

    Just my idiot opinion.

Many folks find new threads by hitting the "New Posts" button at the top of the page:
    upload_2016-9-17_17-31-39.jpg

So discovery is not really a huge issue, for the most part, regardless of which subforum it's posted in

Not me. If the thread isn't good enough to stay on the home page a lot it's probably not worth investigating. :D
