Feeling a little irritated. I am going to be trading my 2008 trd offroad 4x4 double cab for 2016 trd double cab 4x4 and naturally shells are different. Knowing that and suffering profusely with yakima roof racks straining under weight of my hobie pro angler 14 i decided to get rack it topper rack that goes over the cab. Went to store and they told me that most shells for 2016 have over the side lip like my leer does on current truck and that its impossible to install without notching shell which terminates warranty on both rack and shell. Son of a b. Only flat mounted shell is like $2200-2500 which is compatible and aluminum.

I am going to improvise. I will drop old shell off as trade in, get credit towards new shell and instead of leer i am going with ranch and windoors and sliding front window. That should set me back $1800 installed ish. I will then ditch my borked yakima nonsense and hire a fabricator to install removable frame mounted over the shell and cab rack to hold kayak or adopt hardware freight rack somehow. With any luck funds should clear by next weekend and i will be driving 3rd gen.

Im getting a long bed. I suppose if i bought short bed i could sacrifice current shell and dremmel it out and weather seal it against bed. I know it does not fit but it would have been $1800 cheaper that way.

I thought about replacing them but I think it looks cleaner without any bedside decal. I fell in love with my truck again when I took them off...LOL!

You might be able to find a shell that works. I saw this on a price sheet from a Century dealer "Omit Wrap Rails Add an additional $60 for a flat rail design. Mainly for those who plan on having a rack that wraps around the canopy."

Just got my snugtop rebel put on yesterday.

DCLB- I was a little hesitant on how it would look on a longbed.

Ohh I am not worried about shell. Shell is fine... actual roof of the truck dented. I have one of those yakima racks bolted to shell and another yakima rack that clamps into door gap. By virtue of traveling with my travel trailer I have to load kayak to roof. Normally I put one of those hitch T bracket things from hardware freight and slide kayak into bed. Over time of use my roof dented under weight of kayak. I am trying to prevent that from happening on new truck.

I just went to my local topper place and they told me "why don't you try using 4 yakima/thule racks".... no... I am not a cajillionaire and I do not want my truck looking like a christmas tree. My racks hum in the wind as it is thank you very much... adding 2 more will be unbearable.

I am prepping my 08 truck for trade in so will be removing racks. Yakima bars are peeling, not that I need them again or anything.

I would like to go away from mounted racks completely if I could. Factory racks bolt into the roof thing but after watching a tutorial on installation they do not look too strong either. I would need to bolt those on, then a cross bar then saddle things to hold the kayak so it would be going right back to driving down the interstate and wind drowning out music in cabin.

I did notice that many TRD tacomas have that step thing with a rail. I have a local fabricator that lives within a mile of my house so I wonder if I could get him to weld me something like a removable roll cage thing that is easy to put on and off for weekend camping trips. Attach front one to side step bar and back one behind cab somewhere. I would have to give it some deep thought.

The factory roof rack's cross bars fold away (parallel to the vehicle, into the "frame" of the rack) when not in use - you don't need separate cross bars. And they should be quite aerodynamic when folded.

It was pricey. They start at $2,200. This is the first top I've owned and I can already see how useful it is. The whole bed is now a sealed compartment.

I went with snugtop because Leer would've taken longer to ship. I had perfect timing, showed up the day before they were placing their snugtop orders. Plus Leer is a little more expensive.

    upload_2016-9-17_23-20-55.jpg
They told me $3500 but that seems high, even for California.

Suspension, racks, tune, bed, lights. See build thread.
I was qouted for the ARE CX HD for around $2500. Decided against it since I needed to use their integrated rack system.

Do you guys with camper shells have trouble seeing out their rear view mirror?

My last truck has factory tint on rear window. And the camper had its factory tint as well. Together making it impossible to see out the back.
