I test drove a 2017 today. Got the ever popular hum/vibration on the freeway. Definitely felt like something in the drive-train. From what I've read and the way it felt it's probably in the driveshaft but the transmission is something to consider as well. Had me questioning if the manual is more reliable than the auto, in addition to many other concerns. Any discussion I can find on the matter discusses MPG ratings. I don't drive enough to care about that. I don't want to drive a manual again but I would consider it if it meant better longevity. I see what people are saying about the auto lugging a bit under light load but I don't mind giving it more throttle. I just want a truck that will last many years without headache.

mpg's are similar-slight edge to the auto on published tests for 6 cyl- but you could do better- I never owned a auto trans vehicle until now and I think a manual will always outlast an auto (If you know how to drive it). You state "I don't want to drive a manual" and that would be the deciding factor for me-I think everyone wants a vehicle that will last many years without a headache, so without sarcasm I say - good luck with that

Longevity is moot if you buy something you don't like. You won't keep it long enough to matter.

Which model/package did you test drive? What speed ranges gave you vibration? If it were me, I would personally get the manual. The automatic is buggy. You could wait until the automatic is updated internally (the R&D is likely underway now).

I love a stick ... except in heavy stop & go city traffic.

Unfortunately, I get into heavy traffic and others (non-stick drivers) might need to drive my truck in an emergency.

Do you off road a lot? If not, be sure to check out the GM twins also. They are pretty nice. The Toyota is a better off road choice, but only by a small margin, if that is important to you. Also, if Toyota knows you are considering another brand, because of the current model's problems, they may give you an 8 year bumper to bumper to keep you with the Toyota brand.

Same here. Last manual I owned was a 5 speed and it felt like traffic was always going at a speed to fast to maintain in 3rd and too slow for 4th. Annoying.

I have no plans for off road. Just Ohio winters. We may not have the worst but the cities only plow during peak hours due to cost.

I am looking to buy a 17 crew cab long bed however I can't find a trim that allows a long bed and manual transmission to be paired together. Anyone know of a this model?

Get what you like best. I used to drive a manual and would not consider and auto trans. Now I drive an auto and wont consider a manual trans.

some folks around here are going for or preferring MT's due to the OE gearing. MT's are 4.3 from the factory, AT's are 3.91 and drive like it... for an extra MPG or so.
