Painting, what color?

After a fun summer in Moab, on some trails I definitely shouldn't have been on, and some brutal hailstorms, the time has come for some new paint.
Easiest option would be sticking to the red. Wouldn't have to mess with painting the engine bay or door jams.
I love the silver look. Would hid a lot of imperfections. Gives a clean look. I would be bothered by the engine bay, but I have decided if I take this route I'll pull the engine later on.
I really love the inferno look on the newer Tacoma's. Still would hid some imperfections and will look BA.
Not really concerned with resale value as I have no plans to get rid of it. I'm kinda leaning inferno as I haven't seen a 1st gen done yet! The truck in question is a 98' extended cab

 

That's a good looking red you have currently, but if you're going through the effort of having it all repainted I'd pick the color you really want. I voted inferno because I haven't seen a 1st gen in inferno either
for results

 

For me I'd stick with red for the cost savings, and switching colours is a lot of work if done right

 

I agree with the red because you are already leaning in that direction If ever I come across a good auto body duuEude (and the extra cash) I'd probably go charcoal...ish.

 

If you check the cost you might decide like me to let it ride. Red paint is crazy high.

 

Color changes done right will compound the cost to a level more than the value of the truck.

If you DIY, it's not as bad, but it is a TON of work.

If you want make it somewhat unique, experiment with putting some shade of tint or some pearl in the clearcoat. You can get away with skipping the jambs and stuff by doing that, as long as the change isn't overbearing.

 

Had to look up the inferno color, eewwwww reminds me of Chevy orange.
I kid, I kid... Well it did remind me of Chevy orange but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'd keep it the original color, but that's because I'm uninteresting and more of a purist.

 

I haven't checked prices yet, but I'm planning on spraying it myself, so hopefully the cost shouldn't be too bad.
I can live with hail damage but it's the dents the chipped the paint I'm more worried about.

 

Another option is www.monstaliner.com

One of their colors is 'close enough' to yours to leave the jambs alone, and you'll have a rugged finish that lays down much nicer than the normal bedliner stuff.

Oh yeah, that sounds like a legitimate option. I forgot about that stuff. Good recommendation. That'd be kinda cool and much easier to do.

 

I just monstalined my blue tacoma. It came out awesome and is holding up well. Only took about a gallon and a half. Other than the prep which takes forever spraying it with a schutz gun is quick. Plusyou'll be a pro afterwords and be able to spray in bedliners for you and your buddies.

here's a good option, it's not the original toyota color. Acme Finish 1 has a deep red pearl single stage for 150ish plus 50ish for the hardener. if you have all the tools and supplies and know how, you could get this VERY durable paint on your truck for very cheap.

they also have other colors for cheaper. average price is 150 - 200 for color and hardener.

the color i think is based off the chrysler blaze red crystal pearl
find a reseller and ask for the color chip to see if it's close enough to your truck.

 

my vote goes to sticking with the same color...
unless yer gonna strip the whole rig inside and out.

Guess I'm not a fan of hidden paint colors.

Do you have any pictures? I was looking at their color selection and was eyeing their "midnight special" color.

And how she's sitting today. I still need to bedline the front bumper. I use herculiner for the bumpers, rims and actual bed. The truck is the Midnight Special by monstaliner. Make sure you do the door jams. All I did was tape the rubber and sprayed the shit out of where the doors close and such. After I pulled the tape I found some places that I missed and just used little brushes to do the touch ups.




I did a baby blue for all suspension parts to contrast the Midnight Blue.
