Interesting read. Maybe I'll buy a camry next lol. Although I can't believe a Built N/A 5vz wouldn't beat a built N/A 3vzfe...The 5vz would have been the best stock toyota v6 had it been a forged crank and beefier rods...Although with a free 5vz in my future we'll see what happens. Essentially what I've gathered is rebuild a 5vzfe with a 3vzfe crank, pop rods in it, port and polish the heads, give it springs at the very least and boom a great v6. My only issue with building/boosting a 3vzfe is, is that it's not in my truck. I use my truck for its intended purpose quite often, meaning I would drive it the most (over a camry or something). With that in mind I'd really like whatever powertrain that's in it to serve my "go fast purposes" if you will. Not bashing on the 3vzfe, the things sort of a legend...But hey I dont even have the other motor yet so idk what I'll do, heck I may sell all this and swap in a 2j! (lol probably not)

I also know a guy that could get me some 3vzfe cams, then we can put the legend of 3vzfe cams in a 5vzfe to rest...

It's a decent radio, it was the only one that looked like I could push the buttons without looking at it. So far it has been really good about maintaining BT connection and the EQ is good enough to get the sound where I like it.

Just found out that Nissan VQ35DE rods will fit into a 5VZ, this means a set of H beam VQ rods costs $500 and a set of Crossbeam rods from LCE costs $1200. I'll do more research..

Really?! I have a Nissan Maxima with the VQ35DE and for a midsize sedan it gets up and goes. Makes 255HP stock, might be a better engine to begin with for turbo stuff considering it is already setup to read a MAF and MAP sensors and has the variable intake runner assembly.

All this talk about these small displacement motors being superior begs me to ask what are the torque numbers? If you want to turn anything larger than a 24" street tire you're going to need some mf'n torque.

In the case of my VQ35DE which is actually a bigger motor than the 5VZ it makes 255HP and 248 FT,lb of tq. The 3VZ-FE and 3VZ-E don't make much torque unfortunately.

The VQ35 is used in pathfinders, frontiers, 350Z, and maximas but it's a pretty grunty motor, makes a good deal of torque in the lower RPMs.

Yeah I've heard a few reputable people talk about the 5vz not being an engine to build up also. Though I've not heard many alternatives? @Blackdawg has said a supra swap is like $4-6k so that's an idea. By the time you've pulled your 5vz and put rods/pistons and even head work you're definitely into that price range.

LS swap is there too but I'd rather use a turbo to make the power on the top and save my fuel economy in cruise.

The 5vz is legendary because it makes modest power but can do it with little maintenance. They are the epitome of longevity, but when you add a turbo that sorta cancels out because they need quite a bit of help in the fuel delivery department and if you get far enough to want more boost, they'll need rods and a crank at least. The VQ (a Nissan engine) which is .1 liter bigger is also very reliable but I would say less so than the 5VZ, but makes much more power stock, has oil coolers and jets to spray the bottom of the pistons and is much more responsive without major tuning to forced induction.

Not tired of the turbo, just tired of less power haha...The VQ motors as far as I can tell is newer and is still being developed, correct? If this is the case it's immensely impressive the 5vz can still hold a candle too it. And the benefits of keeping a stock motor and building it vs a 2jz swap is ease, ease in knowing the engine bay and engine itself as well as familiarity with components. All that and after you've had one of these trucks you know what goes wrong and how to fix it (Tacoma world) that's the one thing thats a huge benefit with a stock motor vs a swap. (Atleast for me), Familiarity :D

So if I do build this motor with the stated parts it'll have Nissan rods, 3vzfe cams and a 3vzfe crank, barely any 5vz! Lol I hope all that can jive together

The VQ engines are sorta newer. The first major one was the VQ30DE and it is the same block as the VQ35DE but had less performance oriented build, no oil coolers or intake variability. But they have a big advantage in weight. They are all aluminum open deck engines. Which means superior cylinder cooling and lighter engine overall. Easy to find speed parts for them too because they are in performance cars like the 350z and the Infiniti g35 and g37

Not really. Lots of 22R's running 40's...
The VQ is a nice engine but putting one in a Toyota is blasphemous. The 5VZ has an oil cooler btw

No squirters though... unless you got your girl in the passenger seat  :D

Mine has two! (oil coolers) lol but all I need are rods for a VQ :D. Hey man if it works I don't care :D

Oh and when Andrew said 40's he meant 40's in the 1/4 mile :bored:

    (lol not really)

If you want to do an engine swap, I vote the lesser know 5.0L 1GZ-FE.
