Spend some time at my local Toyota Dealer today - Lia Toyota of Schnectady (NY). A few Observations:

    1. They said it will take 4-6 months for my new radio to come in. Since its only the volume not adjusting , I'm sure I can live with it. Seems like a long time though for a big company like Toyota.

    2. They had a large number (20ish) of new Tacoma's on the lot. I saw one single cab 5 lugger, one single cab 4x4, a few access cabs, and a TON of double cabs. I thought that the double cab long beds looked really neat and utilitarian.

    3. Almost all the double cabs were stickered around 31-33k. Don't want to ruffle too many feathers but it seems like at that pricepoint you could buy a Tundra. They had several that were in the same price range right next to the Tacos.

i just got a 2010 and went to 3 dealers near me prior, and as you said, there were plenty of double cabs at all of em.
oh yea, good luck with you radio... yes, 4-6 months seems like a long wait.

If I could get a Tundra or a Tacoma at the same price, I would take the Tacoma.
And if I wanted full-size, I would get an F150.

And yes, the doublecabs are dominating the 2nd gen market. It's the perfect size truck with the right amount of cab space.

I would not be satisfied with a 4-6 week wait on a radio. I had the radio replaced and installed on our Jeep in 2 days - and they needed to order it. Even my TSB springs were at the dealership in 2 days.

The reason it might take so long to get the radio is that it might not be from Toyota themselves but a "helper" company.

They need to make extra those few months so that they can send out the right amount of off assembly line Tacomas.

At that price point, the Tundra is 2wd and doesn't have alot of features on it. I personally gagged when I sat in the Tundra back seat.

What you find when you look closer is that the Double Cab Tacomas at that price are loaded up with package options and dealer add on items. The larger versions of the Tundra with lots of bells and whistles can go into the 50s easily. Just a crew cab Tundra in 4x4 with the 5.7 is in the 40s before adding extras.

I looked at some Tundras, they were really high priced for a decent off road package

I was considering the Tundra but really liked the size of the Tacoma double cab. If they were priced the exact same, I would have still got the Tacoma

I have a base cab 4x4 my radio volume would lock at a certain level Iplayed with turning off the ASL on the radio and could not get the radio volume knob to work for me either. In a last ditch desperate move I turned the ASL off using the right side push knob and then gave the radio a good shot on the face[not a killer hit just enough to get its attention] my volume has worked ever since and I make sure to never use the ASL control setting ever. This might work for you till your new radio gets in. Its worth a shot. Good luck.

I was having probs with my radio shutting down periodically and i took it in and they said it would be tuesday before a new one could get here to be installed. I went last friday.

If I wanted a big gas guzzler I would have stuck with my 02 F150 Supercrew. I downsized to a Toyota Tacoma primarily for better fuel economy. Seems to be holding pretty true so far. Averaging about 17.5mph around town. The Ford typically got about 12.5 in town. I could have picked up a new F150 with bells and whistles for a couple grand more than the Tacoma.
I'm likin my decision so far. Ken:cool:

I have the single cd radio found in base models. It seems to work most of the time. They said its backordered 3 months plus...

I see what you guys are saying about the tundras- they are just a completely different animal. My granfather has a first gen tundra (01 or 02 with about 17k on it), and my 2nd gen tacoma is only fractionally smaller. The new tundras certainally are impressive, but parking, gas mileage, etc would probably not please me.
