    Just an FYI on optics, you can find USGI surplus Aimpoint CompM2's on eBay pretty cheap every now and then. Most have been heavily used in the sandbox but still function flawlessly.

    How necessary is it to check headspace if I have quality parts, a really tight fitting barrel, and it all closes up? You think if I fire a few rounds and use my calipers to measure the case after and inspect for cracks and all I should be good?

    I saw an article or discussion not that long ago regarding headspace and home built ARs. I believe the consensus was, if the upper receiver, barrel, barrel extension, bolt, and bolt carrier are all mil-spec and installed correctly, headspace should be within tolerance. I'm no master armorer, but I have lego'd together almost a dozen AR's using parts that ranged from DPMS and Rock River to Daniel Defense and BCM. I've never checked headspace and I've never had any issues.

    Correct, but depending on parts suppliers that can be a big if. It's wise to check headspace, but for a home builder there isn't much you can do if it's too loose, if it's tight you wan ream the chamber a bit.

    Thank you good sir! My truck build ain't much, but my AR is something I like to show off :D

    Any of you guys got any predator lights and predator calls that you would recommend? I'm hoping to do some coyote hunting when it cools off some more and break the AR in!

    I worked at a machine shop building ARs for 5 years. We always checked headspace, But the only guns that failed had a part that was out of tolerance. I have never checked it on either of my builds. If you buy a complete upper it will come pre checked anyway, same if you buy a matched bolt and barrel. I agree with the rest though. As long as it's mil-spec it should be fine. But it never hurts to check it. Most gunsmith shops would do it for free if you asked, they all will most likely have head space gauges. You could order a set off of brownells or midway USA. BCM or Rainier Arms may have them too. I've seen them on brownells for about 60$. Then you'll have them for any future builds.

    Not necessary, yes it's a good idea but not imperative.
    I have built 4 uppers in the last 2 years and haven't checked headspace on any, none have given me issues.

    Well sadly this is the report from my build...
    Fired 30 rounds through the rifle, the first 10 went through fine and thats when it went down hill. I had 5 slightly dimpled primers that did not fire, one cracked neck, and lastly but the more important thing to note I had 3 times where I would pull the trigger and get two shots. Very scary when youre not expecting that to happen.

    I have done some research and here are the possible reasons why;
    - weak disconnector spring causing slam fire
    - Bad BCG, maybe shorter than normal firing pin
    - Gas block not aligned correctly
    - Head space
    Any other options? Or any of these seem to sounds correct?

    I'd start by finding a friend or someone with a functioning rifle and swap uppers and BCGs around until you can narrow down which major chunk is causing the issues
