4:88 gears for a 2016 on the way.

My truck actually came with 245s h/t and I upgraded to 265s a/t. Mine is SR version

 

Yes I contacted them the second we got ours. Even in stock form it shifted way to much for my likely at freeway speed and I knew with the addition of big tires it would only get worse.

It does effect the speedo, I can only speak to the cars we've done. Generally and I mean "generally" because results may vary. Our 2015 4runner we run 4:88's in it and the speedo is 4mph off. Our 2013 Tundra is about 5mph with 4:88's and 37's. But realistically all trucks/cars are a little off. For a more exact you could run a GPS and compare it to your speedo. I personally just assume it's a a couple mph off and don't worry about it.

IMO no. But that has more to do with everything. The Torq curve the engine IMO is at too high of an RPM compared to the older 4.0 tacoma motor. This engine has to rev a lot more to get the same torq. And the higher the revs the worse the MPG. So on paper, on a flat ground the truck technically will get better MPG un-loaded and on flat ground. If you put any weight in it, if you modify the tire size or do anything else to it your milage will suffer. Because you need more torq to move that weight and or over compensate that extra circumference of the tire.

In the real world what that translates too is I can put 500lbs in the tacoma and it gets 11-12 mpg I put that same 500 lbs in our super charged 7200lb tundra and I get 12-13mpg That's a rough estimate but the point is the tundra has to work way less harder to move that weight because it has the torq to do it at lower RPMS. BUT empty completely stock the Tacoma will get better mileage. I want to say mine got a consistent 17-20 on my trip back from Colorado. I would estimate a stock tundra getting closer to 15mpg.

The auto is way to high geared even stock with stock tires. I run mine in 5th gear always. So if I wanted to go even slightly bigger tires I wouldn't go any higher than the 4:88.

It was suggested by another member that it could likely be the backlash, looked into it and talked to a few diff specialist and they all said the same, sounds a lot like its the backlash.
Problem is the way to usually correct it is just adjust the driveshaft and rack and pinion spacing to factory specs. But if toyotas factory specs are off it will not fix the problem because it will be harder for them to accept they have the wrong spec.
That being the case it could also just be quality control that some weren't set up to the properly distance.

It's going to take time to fix this issue. Until someone bites the bullet and pays to do it themselves from an independent shop its going to be a problem. To be fair though if it is the backlash its not so much a mechanical issue just a noise problem.

 

Your information is a bit wrong. First a rack and pinion is a steering mechanism not a drive mechanism. Second, you can't adjust a driveshaft nor would it cause the howling. The term ring and pinion is what you're looking for. Improper backlash and preload could definitely be the issue but seems odd that Toyota would not learn how to set up a diff after this many years. Mine is silent but the sports come with the old 8" diff. Only the off-road and MT trucks come with the new 8.75" diff. So maybe the issue is only on those.

 

Does the new Tacoma with the 8 inch ring and pinion take the old-style 8 inch gears? Is it only the new 8.75" that were waiting for the new gears. So what I'm asking is can we just order 488's for the old 8 inch and put them in our new auto's with the 8 inch rear.

Or could just be the huge rush for the new tacomas. From what I understand they are flying off the shelves there in the US. They aren't in as high demand here so maybe the canadian spec are having more quality control done?

So even running just 265/70/17s you felt the need to regear? I'm considering 265/75/16s but am concerned it will make it shift even worse on the highway. How much of a difference did you notice when you made the change from the stock tire size?

 

I had my truck in for regear to 4.88 but came to find out I was told the wrong part numbers. Had to get a new front carrier to fit the set they set me. Can anyone here, with a 2016 TRD Sport that has done it, confirm the Nitro part number for rear?

 

I thought it was terrible with stock size and worse now. Either way gears are needed.
