It looks like it was sealed then pulled apart. Any idea what caused that?

Wooden windows, wooden frames, with brick... all shrink and expand with heat and moisture. The sealant has exceeded its useful life by what I see. (assumptions made because it has storm window frames too.)

That's a pretty significant gap lol. Think it would be a good idea to jam a piece of foam backer rod behind the caulk?

Storm window? Surprisingly they are gas filled windows. But yes, we'll beyond their prime. Stamp in thermoseal is like 1963.

I mistook the black whatever mounted to the brick as a storm window frame, oops!

It's not finished, and it looks pretty rough... But this will be our new and relocated wood shed. There's only 5 new boards in the whole thing. Everything else was repurposed from other things we've torn down

Do you get much wind? I ask because it doesn't look like the roof will provide much overhang. Where I live, if it's raining, it's usually coming in sideways. I added two feet of roof overhang to the dry wood storage on my porch and the bottom third of the stack still gets wet.

Not much wind during rain. We will put some left over corrugated metal on top and back. we can cover the sides, if needed, later. Waiting eagerly for rain season to see!

looking for some input, hopefully someone on here can offer some direction. quick background:

my house is just under or just over 100 years old, not quite sure on the exact build date. so at some point, someone removed the original banister and installed a cheap piece of crap. similar to what you would see in a basement. a lot of the first floor still has the original woodwork and it just makes the banister i have now look terrible. so anyways, i came across this on craigslist. i have a chance to go and get this banister, but the ad says i must remove it. any idea on where to start with the removal of something like this? i really would love to take this apart and get it home with minimal injuries to the banister so i can use it at my house.

Most of that should come off with a gentle application of a flat bar and hammer. Just find places where the wood is nailed together and gently pry. Move slowly lol the wood may be brittle. U can use a block of wood between flat bar and other wood to protect finish. U may be able to pull the handrail in one piece. I'd start by pulling the casing that runs underneath the bannister.
It will prolly need modified to fit your steps tho as it is very unlikely that it is the same pitch
Unless it's glued. Then I'm out of ideas lol

Thats exactly what i am afraid of. if it's glued, then i don't think it i can remove it and still be able to re-use it.

If your stairs aren't the same rise / run , you'll be trimming the spindles and railing

Are you not allowed to damage anything else? If you're removing it why not cut it away from everything so it is left in one piece?:sawzall:

i'm not sure what this guy is doing with this house. i didnt get that far into the conversation yet. i figured i would get some opinions as to what i'm up against first. i'm not sure if this guy is demoing this house (in which case i will sawzall everything) or if they are just replacing the banister with something new.

Got the gas mileage down to 13mpg! Modification complete
I would never try to re-use a staircase unless the rise and run was the same...even then I would just build my own. It's hard enough making a nice staircase with new materials...much less a staircase out of another home...you will be opening a can of worms.

I thought maybe i could take the spindles, the railing and the newel posts and be able to modify them enough i could use them. i didn't think if the rise/run was different it would make a difference on those items, but i also never did this before.
