People Who Actually Off Road Often. Aftermarket Tire size?

Depends on your wheel width and offsets. People with TRD Pro wheels get away with wider size tires with no trimming but then again everybody and their mama has TRD Pro wheels. I'd rather be different...

I think offroading has more to do with driving skill and other things like airing down, tire width, tread type, planning on how much time you'll need, knowing where you're going and what terrain you'll be most likely encountering than a couple cm's of tire size. You should be fine with either size in a good tire for your intended areas, but bigger is bigger. Let us know what you plan on going with!

Don't cruise malls and regear scheduled.
Bigger tires or already shitty transmission makes it shift more. I drive in S4 all the time. If I knew how bad this truck sucks I would've never bought it and wish I kept my jeep.
But if you have one you might as will drive what you like .

Ditto. I don't have any problems anywhere i off-road running this size and the BFG's were available in a lighter, load range "c" tire.

 

285 75 16 fit fine without a lift and no rubbing.

 

I did, smart ass. Dealer said do not take it more the 2 miles from dealership. Some alarm would go off.( I'm sure BS) No highways within 5 miles.
I have 4.88 gears order and as soon as there in it'll be perfect.
I tried to trade it back on a 4Runner but only would give me 32,000 trade. So there goes everyone's theory on resale.

 

I still have the OEM 17s - about to slap on some 265/70/17 Duratracs. Thoughts on off road performance?

 

The OEM TRD OR setup offroads great IMO. It's the other 90% of driving that has me (and many others) complaining. Hood vibrations, driveline vibrations, wind noise, howling rear differentials, howling lower control arms, transmission that shifts like crap (slipping/flare between gears or not holding gears; delayed kickdown) yes...even post TSB, and then you have the 3.5L V6 which does feel weak down low on the road. Slap larger tires on there and it just exacerbates the trans / motor combo issues.

Everyone has a different opinion of what "off roading" is. I ran/run 285s (3rd gen & 2nd gen) with no rubbing and am in 4 wheel drive most weekends. You'll have to experiment with what works for your situation and your version of off roading. There's just no 2 ways about it.

 

I run 285/75/17 (34) 3" lift and only had to do cut the cab mount and trim the bottom of the fender flare in the back and front
