2017 Double Cab Long Bed Offroad Build

Well after owning a 2005 TRD Sport Access cab from 2008-2011 and a 2008 Tundra from 2011-2016 on September 6, 2016 I placed an order for a Double cab, long bed, TRD Offroad, premium & tech package non-JBL.

I had my Tundra pretty well built with a TRD Supercharger, King coilovers, Deaver springs, ADS triple bypass shocks plus a ton of other goodies (pic for posterity sake attached)

While I'm playing the waiting game I'm planning out my build that I'll hopefully have done by the spring. Here are my plans so far that will get my in comfort to remote camp sites and mountain biking trails.

Why are you opting out of the Tundra for a Tacoma?

 

Gas mileage, garage space, dont have any need for towing in the foreseeable future. The Tundra hasnt given me any problems yet but I'm also looking for new vehicle reliability versus 8 yr old with 115k miles on the clock

 

Well here's this week's update - Toyota is building the truck with an ETA of 10/24. That is with my dealer trading their allocation spot with another dealer. Otherwise it would be mid november.

But on the fun side of things I ordered a KB Voodoo rack and redline hood struts already. let the parts begin piling up!

Well after making my deposit on 9/7 my build date is now 11/3 and the best guess is that it will arrive to Utah middle of the month.

So far I have some parts piling up:
AFE Intake w/ scoop
MBRP exhaust
Access Tonneau cover (Auto anything was having a good sale lol)
Onboard pressureized water system
SDHQ behind the grill LED mounts


I think i'll be ordering my suspension set up soon as well even though that might not go on till the spring

 

Well after 9 weeks of waiting I got my truck last night! Picked her up with 4 miles on the ODO!

So far I have about 105 miles and am averaging 19.5mpg

It feels good going down the road but I am still learning the power band and how to work with the automatic transmission

Got some work done this weekend!

@KB Voodoo bed rack installed along with an Access Original tonneau cover. I had to get a little creative with the brackets to get them to sit flush against the bed rails so the tonneau would fit tight. All in all an awesome product that went together really well. It seems more solid than the welded tubular bedrack I had on my Tundra too. I have a nice storage solution that I can lift the whole set up on and off with minimal effort too.

Also got my RCI sliders installed @Joshp767. This is the third set of sliders I've installed on various vehicles and these were the best fitting and easiest install! I do wish they were a little bit longer, but I'm still happy with my choice. I still have to bolt thru the additional bottom locations when I get the motivation to start drilling

Got my Rockblockz front mudflaps on too.

Showing up this week are light bars, SDHQ hidden winch, switch pro panel, and BajaDesigns fog lights. Stay tuned for more

Got my two LED bars mounted behind the grill last night. This is using the SDHQ mount and mictuning single row LED bars. Still need to get them wired up though.

Also got my hi-lift mounted in the bed using relentless fab mounts.

I've had a busy week.

Installed the Redline tuning hood struts and Hondo Garage ram mount last night. Don't have pics of these installed yet.

But.... my SDHQ Hidden winch mount showed up! @tubbsisland Super excited to get this thing installed. It is built like a tank! Really well thought out design to keep things simple and I like that it includes the control box relocation bracket too. Whoever SDHQ has to do their packing must really love their job since this box was totally full of that expanding foam and everything showed up in perfect shape.

 

Switch Pros SP8100 Installed on a Pelfrey Built fuse panel!

Super simple install and really easy to program. This was way better than I could have imagined. After spending hours and hours wiring switches and relays on other vehicles I got this done with no mess and no having to go back and fix things up.

The @SDHQ OFFROAD panel is great and this thing looks OEM.

 

Any updates with the intake and exhaust combo?

 

SDHQ hidden mount with Smittybilt winch installed. SDHQ designed their mount for the Warn Xenon winch but my X20 10k winch fit in perfectly. This mount is an absolute beast. Welds look amazing and the bottom brackets really tie everything together plus the integrated shackle mounts are a great idea! I'm glad I went with SDHQ it's a little pricier than other options out there but I think the quality, well thought out design, and clear instructions make it well worth it

The only differences is that the control box mount needed to have new holes drilled and the template provided for trimming the front bumper is different so I had to trim it differently and still need to go back and touch it up a little bit to get my license plate mount on.

Baja design fog lights installed - I guess I forgot to take a picture though...

AFE intake with scoop is also on. It has a nice sound to it, not too loud at all. Hard too tell according to the butt dyno if there is any real increase in overall power but the truck does seem to downshift less while maintaining highway speeds which is a good thing. So far I think any MPG increases are negligible but I'll keep an eye on it

@Metallikatz3 Im doing the same winch mount SDHQ hidden mount and same winch. Is the clutch lever still easy to get to? Any pic by any chance. Also any tips would be great if any but i looked at the instructions and they are pretty well written and easy to understand.

How hard was it to take off the bumper and install the SDHQ mount? I am ordering the mount this week and going to throw a 30" double led bar in there.

 

The clutch lever isn't going to be that easy to get to, unfortunately. I will probably take one of the vertical grill pieces out so that it is easier to reach thru the bumper. The easiest way to get to it now is to pop the hood and reach down. Which isn't a huge deal as long as you're not in the middle of some mud puddle wedged up against a tree.

But, if you're OK with using the power out on the winch it's not a big deal and with the Smittybilt wireless remote it's pretty easy.

One note though is that I had to re-drill the SDHQ solenoid box bracket so that it would fit the smittybilt box. Aside from that I followed their instructions to a T and it went pretty smoothly. The only issue I had taking the bumper off was that the brackets right underneath the headlights have to have the bumper pulled out first which I didn't do on one side and ended up cracking the bracket.
