From what I am seeing Toyota did nothing on the 17s regarding the LCA howl.........So I doubt they will do anything major to the 17s

A technical service bulletin is nothing more than procedure on how to correct a known problem, issue, annoyance, ect. Toyota doesn't necessarily have to include the modified software for the transmission. Basically they are saying the programming is fine but it certain customers come in with such and such issues than, this is the method to correct it. They may opt to never offer this or any other modified or new software. That's their discretion. Nothing major has changed on the 2017, nor shall unless some type of safety issue arises.

The VDS (Vehicle Descriptor Section) numbers are part of the VIN#. A VIN is a 17 digit/letter number broken down in a few parts. The 1st position (1xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) is the region code (North America, Asia, ect). The second position (x2xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) is the country code (U.S., Mexico, Canada, ect). The third position (xx3xxxxxxxxxxxxxx) identifies the type of vehicle (car, truck, ect). Positions 4-8 (xxx45678xxxxxxxxx) is the VDS code. This identifies model, engine type, body type, ect. Position 9 (xxxxxxxx9xxxxxxxx) is a check digit. Just to verify its a correct VIN. Position 10 (xxxxxxxxxAxxxxxxx) is the Model year. Position 11-17 (xxxxxxxxxxBCDEFGH) is production info and vehicle info. So that's how you read a vin.

In Toyotas TSB they list the VDS numbers of effected vehicles that the TSB would correct. If your VDS numbers match up then the TSB should correct the issues Toyota listed, if that's what you are experiencing. I asked users to post the first 8 number of the vin just to make it easier for them to list it and for me to look it up

Just wondering where you are searching the TSB for toyota. did a quick google search and the only stuff coming up is carcomplaints.com and it says there's none for the third gens just a recall for the airbags

So here's a little update. Took my 2017 TRD OR to the dealer today to have them do the TSB 0077-16. Told them I've had multiple P -> D shift delays in the mornings. Brought the printed out TSB with me and mentioned that my Vin was listed in the VDS. They didn't fight me or anything and performed the TSB. I even got the sticker! I can't really tell if they TSB made a big difference to how the truck drives, but I do only have 650 miles. I'll see tomorrow if the shift delay is gone.

I also told them I want them to check the transmission fluid because being that it was an issue with 2016s, its more than likely an issue with 2017s, especially since the shift delay carried over. They agreed to check the fluid, again without any push back. Turned out that it was 0.5 quart low. They topped it off. Glad I had them check.

But my main reason for going in was to show them the rear diff howl that I have at 55mph. Went on a test drive with a tech and showed them the howling. They went for another test drive later when I was gone and weren't able to reproduce the howling. They did check the diff fluid and topped it off. Mentioned it was only a little low. But they did make a note that I came in for the howling so when they come out with a fix, I'll bring it in again. I actually prefer this because I don't want to be out of a truck for multiple days with them trying to fix something they don't yet know how to fix. I'll let the Toyota engineers figure out a solution rather than having techs taking apart the rear end.

In any case, I feel better now that I got the TSB performed, checked the transmission fluid, and noted the howling. I'm still happy that I bought the truck and have no regrets.

I'd certainly check the Colorado forums just as you are checking the Tacoma forums and do your due diligence. My father works at a GM dealership, I've owned a few Chevys. I was excited about the Colorado in 2014 when the 2015's came out. Then I drove one. Interior is nice, but I hate the looks (preference). Tech is nice. Ride is rough, steering feels dead (kinda good, kinda bad). Engine felt peppy, more so than the Tacoma. Ground clearance is a joke. G80 locker is mechanical and automated (good and bad).

It really isn't a bad truck. It's a body on frame too, with good towing and payload capacity.

I just simply like the look of the Toyota, and the reliability. We have had a lot of people complain on the forums but it's because they don't like how it was engineered, not because it broke down. There are a few stories, as all vehicles will have issues, but you are debating NOT buying a truck because you don't like how it shifts, not because it's not shifting properly (referring to driving shifting, not P>D delay). I have a friend with a Colorado and all he does is complain and little issues, something about Daytime Running Lights and some squeak. These are cookie cutter trucks made by mass production, and Toyota is not going to fix the ECM because 0.05% people complain, they are going to release a TSB and fix those people and let the other people just not sweat the little stuff.

Meanwhile the transmission in my 2011 Silverado died @ 69,500 miles. I had 1 month of powertrain warranty left. My best friend's 2011 Cruze transmission died @ 90,000 miles. He was 2 months out of powertrain warranty. $3800 later..... 2 of the 3 Chevy's that I personally had a hand in owning in 2011 already have had replaced transmissions, both this year. Wife's car was traded in @ 80,000 miles (2011 Equinox) still going ok.

Another user posted it. If I stop at our Toyota dealership tomorrow I'll see if I can print off or email myself all current TSB's for 2016+ Tacoma's

At this point, take the Colorado. Never ever thought I'd say that. However, with the screw job Toyota is doing to their fans, the Tacoma isn't going anywhere but down. Maybe Fourth Gen will get it right. I really wanted a 2017 TRD Sport. But I also needed something that's reliable. So I bought a 2016 4Runner SR5 Premium. Not what I wanted, but the build quality and reliability won out.

    so many are saying this.
Is there a bunch of 3rd gens on the side of the road that I'm not aware of? I only know of one thread where someone posted how their new truck died and that was prior to all the low trans fluid stuff and that was the cause of his.

Seriously there might be issues with the diff and such but you and a few others on here are making it sound like the 3rd gen is the worst vehicle made now and that every day its driven you might be stranded on the road.
Problems like these can take time to fix. But toyota is aware and trying to solve them. Give it some time.
Do a quick google search when the 2nd gen came out it had plenty of problems too, some greater than these of the 3rd gen yet that didn't destroy toyota's following.
Cant see a GM being more reliable than a toyota.

I owned 2 2nd Gens (2006 and 2011), so new in the production cycle and later. BOTH had the same annoying blower motor issue for the AC, I remember people railing it back then too. There were so many posts saying 2nd Gens are crap and 1st Gens were the last good Toyota truck. Now the 1st and 2nd Gens have coalesced to fight the 3rd Genners :) Hopefully a 4th Gen comes along soon so we can all hate those guys cause they sure don't make em like they used to! Stuff costs more! Things are different...

All joking aside, the people who are scared to purchase a truck because it might rattle are the same ones afraid to take it off road. I have 2,000 miles on mine and I've been off pavement at least 2 times a week, once for 20 miles on a trail I'd never done before, bone ass stock.

I'm slowing unsubbing the complaint threads and moving toward the camping threads. I've got a warranty, if something breaks they will fix it. If something displeases me maybe I'll fix it. Either way in a few years my truck will be worth a ton of trade, regardless of the handful of people that say otherwise. The rest of the world still believes Toyota makes a better product, and so do I. Go own a Chevy and report back in 2 years how you enjoy that truck. I have THREE (Passenger front, passenger rear, and driver rear) door handles on order for a 2012 Silverado for my friend. They are all broke. 2 of mine broke. Transmission died at 69,500 miles. Oil pan leaked 2 different times. Onstar module died. Fuel tank sensor died and not covered under powertrain or emissions warranty (removed bed to fix, was kinda fun). Evap sensor for fuel tank also died (fixed under warranty so I don't know how to do it.) Gauge cluster sometimes wouldn't work until I shut off truck and started it back up. Few other silly little issues but nothing worth noting. Never lifted, off roaded (it was 2wd), or towed more than 5,000 lbs. Engine, however, was always good and strong. Actually, engine in that truck was great.

Buy a Chevy if you like fixing cars, I actually became pretty good at it in the last 5 years. I got lots of practice.
