Hate to break it to you. Air lockers aren't cheap. You'll probably sit around 1500 installed.

I'm going to do a Detroit locker. It's an auto locker, but it only unlocks when you let off the gas. This locker can be had for about 500 but I'll be close to 1000 installed. Those lunch box lockers are about as cheap you can go. They aren't that great. Looking for cheap. Pick up a spare diff and weld the gears.

What's up John! Is there a thread for that trip?
Maybe, we might have fiesta island round 2 that weekend and we're going to Azna the weekend after. I'll keep you posted if we can make it though, that sounds like it's going to be a big group

Well i was hoping to buy the parts (cash money) and install myself. Or atleast have the locker and new gears installed in the third member and then finish the rest myself.

These are the cheapest out there but they looked the best to me. Flush over the exhaust pipe and they lay over each other. The rest have a gap between plates or set the pipe in a valley type thing.

The transfer is the most money because of the rear brace

I had a full-time Lockrite diff locker in the rear end of my '99 Prerunner. It worked great and never gave me any problems driving on the street, they're really only problematic that way with the manual trans. Just have to be sure not to gun it around corners so it won't lock up. It only locks if one wheel starts to slip. Was much cheaper than a selectable locker (think I paid $300 or so for mine back in 2005) and worked great off-road. Of course a selectable one would be ideal but if you can't find one, that's always an option.

My friend and I installed it in my Prerunner ourselves and it wasn't that hard...granted he was much more mechanically inclined than I was.

Just to make it worse, this is the Pelfreybuilt and it's 60 dollars more and you get this big bulge that the exhaust goes into... Gross

Lunchbox lockers are great for the price, I grew to love the "CLACK CLACK CLACK" sound it made when taking turns on the street, lol. Just had to be extra careful driving during/after a rainstorm.

Of course, nothing beats having a selectable locker but either one will get the job done.

That's a pretty penny but it'll be worth it, that is if you're intent on not putting that money toward a 4x4 or 4wd swap ;)

Putting a locker in the rear of my 2wd Prerunner was the best mod I ever did for that thing, I was able to do way more with the rear end locked than I ever was open diff.

Well I mean I would hate to spend that much if I didn't have to. I just can't find an air locker that will fit into my housing

They have an option without the bulge but it requires an exhaust re-route. But yes that bulge looks like poo and you lose clearance because of it.

Yeah that's weird, you'd think there would be an ARB locker option available for your truck...I know that there's one for the 3.4l Tacos (used to be anyway). Unfortunately, aside from a Toyota e-locker, ARB is the only other selectable option for Tacomas exclusively.

I know some guys are buying e-lockers from an Australian company called Harrop I believe, they make them for the Toyota Hilux but apparently they are compatible with some Tacoma diff's. Not sure if some fab work is required or not but I remember reading about it in a few threads on the forums here. May be worth checking out :notsure:

Basically from what I'm seeing I either have to modify my existing housing to make it fit or just buy a new third member. Seems like I'll be breaking the bank /:

Don't worry, you're not alone there. I'd be willing to be that we can all relate to that feeling thanks to this hobby lol.
