Blu-ray player

Well I'm looking to get a blu-ray player. They are pretty expensive, I can get a PS3 instead and it will play blu-ray. But my question is: Is blu-ray really more clear then DVD's? I want to hear from people that don't own blu-ray players yet.

Here's my situation. I've got a new 1080p tv. I figured I'd get a blu-ray player for it to play movies on it. But the friggin players are $400. A PS3 is $400. So I told my wife that I'm getting a PS3 so we can see blu ray movies. She said, F**K that, just watch movies on the DVD player and get a WII instead.

I kinda like her idea, but man this is a 50" TV I'm gonna be pissed if DVD looks like shit on it because it's so big. That's why I'm asking if you guys have noticed much of a difference.

 

i agree......dvd quality is still awesome, and theres alot more of it out there than the blu-ray shit!! they can keep the blu-ray!! its good, but it aint that good!!

 

Blu-Ray is absolutely amazing. Go to any electronics store (Best Buy, Curcuit City, etc.) and look for a display showing a Blu Ray movie. The difference is incredible, and I want one. Some displays show half-screen standard definition, half-screen Blu-Ray high definition. It's a stunning difference.

(A lot of the Blu Ray players will 'up-convert' your standard DVDs to be hi-def, too. It's not as high-def as the Blu Ray discs, but it's pretty cool.)

I don't own one yet because I'm waiting for the price to come down more. When I looked a while back the top-of-the-line players were over $1k. I went this weekend to look and the best ones (that weren't multi-disc or blu-ray/HD DVD combos) were in the $330 to $400 range. The way electronics go, I suspect that they'll be in the $200s or better by Christmas.

Also, there is some sort of 'update' to Blu-Ray technology/formatting... something. I'm not clear on it. The thing to watch out for is that the player you buy is either compatible with the upcoming upgrade, or can be converted by downloading free updates. Sorry I don't know specifics, but a salesperson who knows what he's talking about should be able to help with this. This weekend, the best player that circuit city had to offer was compatible, and it was in the mid $300s.

i dont think invest on blu-ray is worth yet, yea, is awesome, but its new technology, i prefer to wait a time before i buy new technology.....

You can also look into some of the DVD players that upconvert to 1080p...not sure how much of a difference you get. I have a XBOX 360 that upconverts and the standard DVDs look pretty darn good. So, I would wait until Blu-Ray goes down in price and there are more movies available.

IMO, it's not worth $400... Otherwise I'd have one . I think my strike price is about $250, which I'm hoping to see by the end of the year (or maybe as a result of Christmas sales, etc.)

Keep in mind that to get the most out of the system, you'll need a few expensive cables to hook the blu-ray player to the TV & stereo: HDMI and optical audio, to name two.

 

Besides, i hate that i have now a good collection of dvds, and have to start collecting new ones, damn it....

 

I heard that, too. Really, any blu-ray player with an ethernet connection is safe. (If you keep it connected to the internet all the time, you don't have to worry about it. If you don't, you'll need to take your player to your ineternet source, hook it up, and let it download.)

 

Currently you can only use the 1080p tv to its full potential with Blu-ray. HD show on cable/satellite are not 1080p. I can tell a big difference in picture quality. I showed a neighbor recently. I put a regular dvd in my dvd recorder & a Blu-ray movie in the PS3. On a Sony 46" 1080p LCD tv. And flipped back & forth between the two. I was even amazed at the clarity. The Blu-ray was almost like being in the movie.

The crazy thing is you can get a PS3 cheaper than just a stand alone player. I would go for the PS3. The movies do cost a little more, but are gradually coming down in price as people move towards this technology.
And then you can also play games. Best of both. My Son can kick my butt on Guitar hero 3 & he is only 11.

I have on Blu-ray: Spiderman 3, & Resident Evil: Extinction. Those were the last movies I have purchased. Any action movie I buy going forward will be Blu-ray.

Also I have my Blu-ray hooked through my router. It is very secure. Plus you can download updates when available, music, videos, & games.
